Draupadi was the daughter of the King Drupad the ruler of kingdom of Paanchal. Drupad had studied with Dron, the teacher of Pandavs, (the 5 mighty princes of Mahabharata) but after growing up and assuming Lordship over his kingdom, he forgot his friend and refused to help him in his hour of need.  Dron was thrown out of Drupad’s court after facing bitter humiliation. He pledged to avenge his insult and asked his students, the mighty Pandavs, to defeat Drupad. When Drupad was thus captured  and subsequently humiliated by Dron, he resolved to beget a son who would kill Dron and avenge him. He sought the help of two talented sorcerers Yaj and Upyaj to perform a great Fire-sacrifice. From the sacred sacrificial fire emerged a handsome and strong man equipped with all kinds of armours and weapons. The sages named him Dhrishtadyumna and proceeded to wind up the ritual. But lo! and behold, out of the flames appeared a damsel of unparalleled beauty. As she emerged out of the sacrificial fire, the whole area was suffused with the fragrance of blue water lilies.. she was Draupadi (the daughter of Drupad) and it was prophesied that she would be the reason for a great upheaval in the Kuru Dynasty..  In a one-off example of polyandry, Draupadi married the five Pandav princes and w hen her eldest husband Yudhishthir lost her to Kauravs (along with his kingdom and his brothers), in a deceitful game of dice, she was humiliated in the court of Hastinapur. The injustice meted out to the Pandavs and their wife, fostered enmity between the two clans which culminated in the mighty Mahabharat War! The background is formed by a picture of an ancient fort taken by me in Rajasthan
