When I put up a picture of a Winged Lion and asked if anyone knew other names for it, I got several names that while they were winged lions, they were actually winged lions plus something that made them something else. For example a manticore is not the same thing as a winged lion because it has a pointy tail (needles or a scorpion's tail) and a man's face. And if you go pre-pulp fantasy/D&D, monticores aren't even usually winged.
A griffon is another type of winged lion that isn't the same thing as a winged lion. It is a lion with the wings of an eagle, as well as something like an eagle's head and a couple of eagle feet. My high-school's mascot was a griffon, so I'm pretty familiar with it.
This doesn't have a background or anything fancy, but I did manage to make it look better with color than the original sketch.
