Little Match Girl

This is my Christmas card for 2009/2010.I thougt for a long time to illustrate the Andersen fairytale "The Little Match Girl". Since I was a child, the fairytales of Andersen were by far my favourites, perhaps because they are soooooo sad. Whatever the Disney pictures may show, I think that a happy end is not necessary to pleased to children, as well as a bad end will not traumatize them. May I confess that I never saw the Disney Little Mermaid, only because I cannot imagine a happy end to this story: when I was a child I precisely loved it because of its bad end (bad, but together full of hope). And among all the Andersen fairytales, the Little Match Girl was my favourite. Some people may think that it is the sadest one (the death of a little girl in a cold Chrismas eve), but, as Andersen always did, it is together full of hope and love, a perfect story for Christmas.Perhaps because I especially love this story and had it very present in my mind, I did this picture very quickly, it took only more or less a couple of hours to do. But I find it particularly successful, I love the way it turned out, with its sketchy and spontaneous style. Even the bad scan (my scanner is horrible) don't spoil it. I hope you'll like it too.
