This web page is part of a hosted copy of the WoodWorks eZine at Elfwood. (#156) The eZine is no longer updated, nor does it have it's own domain left... This also means that it's no use to contact the WoodWorks editors, etc, etc... | | |
From the Moderators
By Eliza Leahy
What do you do if you have a question about Elfwood?
Elfwood has a support crew of nineteen people. All of them are experienced moderators and coordinators (a coordinator is someone who coordinates between different areas of Elfwood Lothlorien mods, Zone mods, Support etc). If you have a question the best thing to do is to go to the "contact us" page on Elfwood at http://elfwood.lysator.liu.se/contact/contact.html.
Some of the most common questions asked and their answers:
Lost password/UID
If you have forgotten your password and your email has changed, you can write to support and they will help you. You will need some way to identify yourself: usually some information from the extranet that only you would know and only they can see such as your address or phone number or your "secret question". If you don't have a secret question on the extranet, now is a good time to go write one! It's the best way to identify yourself to staff in this situation. Just go to the extranet and log in, then go to "information about you" and "(Secret) Internal details about you"
If your email hasn't changed you can retrieve your password yourself by logging onto the extranet using only your UID. The extranet will then offer to send your password to your email address.
If you have forgotten your UID, a member of the support crew can retrieve that for you, as long as you give them your name. If you only use a nick on the email they may not be able to help you without sending another email back and forth.
So, please remember to include any information in the first email to save time and extra emails.
Can you help me find…
Sometimes we get emails like this… "Can you help me find a picture I saw on your site. It was a (insert rough description here) Thank you"
Elfwood has over 38,000 items. I'm afraid we always have to say "Sorry, no" to these requests!
Can you link to me…
Again, the answer to this is "Sorry, no."
Elfwood does not have a links page. However, every member can have a link to their own web site from their Elfwood Gallery.
If you want to link back to Elfwood there is a page of banners and instructions at http://elfwood.lysator.liu.se/bannerroom.html.
Search engine
Our search engine seems to break down on a regular basis. It's not surprising really when you think of how big Elfwood is and how fast it grows!
But every time it does we get email after email very helpfully telling us "your search engine is down, when will it be back up?"
Usually we don't know WHEN. When someone can fix it. But you can bet we do know it's down, so please, no helpful emails telling us so!
There is now a link to google on the front page of Elfwood. Anything you type in there will use the google engine to search Elfwood. This does not tend to break down, so if our internal engine is not working, please use the google search engine.
Queue size
Another helpful email we often have to deal with is this… "Your queues are really long. You should put more moderators on."
We appreciate peoples wanting to help. But we know, more then most, just how long the queues are! Putting new moderators on isn't as easy as it sounds. First we have to send out a test, they have to do a test, then we have to mark the test. If they pass then we have to add them to the moderators and to several mailing lists. Then we have to train them. The training process takes approximately a month. We can't handle too many new moderators at a time because we have a limited number of people who can be online at the right time to handle the training. Too many new mods at a time equals more mistakes.
We don't need more volunteers either, at any one time we have 100 volunteers waiting in line to hear back from us. By all means please do volunteer if you would like to, but be prepared for a very long wait for us to get back to you. Also, make sure that before you volunteer that you are over 18 and that your gallery is perfectly "clean" according to Elfwood rules.
Picture rejections
If you like you can also use this form to ask why a picture has been rejected. You can also just reply to the moderators email as well. Either way your email will get to us. Abuse, however, will not get an answer. We just delete it. If it's really bad it may even be forwarded to Thomas and your gallery may get suspended or even deleted. So please, be polite. We do the best we can.
