When creating art in Photoshop, work larger than your finished picture is intended to be, and add lots of little details.
Glistens on the edges of leaves, darker speckled textures on the ground, buttons and seams on clothing, individual hairs rather than a solid block of colour.
Often it's the little details that really make the picture, and when you reduce the size of the picture for your finished product all of your work on details should really pay off.
Sequential Art vs. Pretty Art Sylvia Leung discusses the differences between these two popular types of art.
Character Sheets A good story has well thought-out characters. Crissy Gottberg helps out the struggling writer with some character sheet guidelines.
