This is just what the title suggests, a poem about the legendary island of Atlantis. I think it's pretty deep. (Get it? Deep? Atlantis? Ha! Yeah, so anyway...)

Atlantis

The ebbing tide has barely died
And lo! The vision comes again
Unbroken spires! And ghostly fires
That do not warm my prickled skin
Unlucky strand of silver sand
A hundred leagues your compass spanned!
Bewilder me, that I may see
What is obscured for other men.

The sun, its bed a dusty red
Leaves wand’ring footsteps on the street
Reflective glass at ev’ry pass
Spills crimson at the tower’s feet
The marble gate, whose doors await
The specter of unspoken fate
Lies white and tall before the fall
That fortune rushes out to meet.

Eternal sea, whose melody
Today no less than then enthralls
Immortals wrote your single note
Behind these alabaster walls
Aquatic skies, what secret lies
Beneath the surface of your eyes?
It silent sleeps in coral keeps
And hallowed iridescent halls.

Now ocean furls around the pearls
That only mem’ry’s record saves
Forever lost the sterling frost
Of numberless enchanted caves
Abysmal plea of wizardry
That paints unwelcome majesty!
For mercy, cease; return at peace
Below the cover of the waves!

I'm writing a story about Atlantis and I have to tip my nice black bowler hat to you--this is what inspired me. Congratulations on being such a great poet! 2

For all the low-grade poetry I wade through here on Elfwood and elsewhere (much of it my own!), it's quite a relief to read something as smooth and masterful as this. Your rhyme scheme is impressive, and quite effective. The sonorous rhythm kept me reading, and I could see the City rising up around me, through the misty deeps of the sea. Thank you for that vision, it was quite welcome.

Someone has a black bowler hat? Where?! Hehe...I love those things... Aaaanyways, I really loved your poem. There is Atlantis-fever running around Elfwood and I really can’t see why it hasn’t happened BEFORE (because it’s so awesome!), but this poem and your writing style is unique, and that’s nice to see. A lot of people kind of steal other people’s ways of writing things and think no one will notice their lack of otherwise self-wit, but I NOTICE... Beware all literature-technique stealers, I WILL call you out!! BEWARE!!! (Okay, was it just me, or did that echo?Hmm...22)
