I tried something a little different on the rhyme scheme for this poem - comments on it are welcome. As for the actual content, I think this is one of my better poems to date.

The Fading Autumn

They say he burned his life too bright to die
His blade was swift, his wrath was hot, and cold
The weight of strength and sadness in his eye
He wrote his name in stars across the sky.

I saw him last a tired man, and old
Not as the moon, but as the sun at night
The men today are eager, young and bold
But silver, ever silver - where is gold?

His countenance was onetime free and light
Where now that laughing face, so swiftly gone?
The days to him were evergreen and bright
Why now a beard of thin and ashen white?

All men are equal, said the rising dawn
It knew not what the years to come would bring
And pieces both, it's true, the king and pawn;
But which of them will sleep in Avalon?

How sadly, now, the minstrels come to sing
The children weeping, hardly knowing why
And caught between, the distant mountains ring
For Arthur, here, the once and future king!

Another great representation of the passage of time. The first stanza (especially its first line) is a perfect opening to the whole poem, very bold and strong.
The rhyme scheme here is indeed interesting, if a little hard to catch onto at first.

Your rhymes are so clever- each verse is linked to the last. I love the whole "plot" line that you follow- what a beautiful description of a faded legend!

:-) Brian Buckley replies: "I think you're the first person to read this poem who's mentioned anything about the rhymes linking each stanza to the previous one. Good eye!"

The once and future king!! W007! That's awesome I totally love it. Plus it had a scheme I recognized (though I can't remember the name of it). Needless to say, you're a great poet.

:-) Brian Buckley replies: "If you recognized the scheme, you're way ahead of me - I pulled it basically out of nowhere. I'd be interested to know what its name is. As for "the once and future king" - you probably already know this, but for anyone who doesn't, I didn't invent that line. It comes from the end of a much older work called "Le Morte D'Arthur" (I think that's how it's spelled). Supposedly these words appear on Arthur's tombstone."

Wow... *is inspired to go write more poetry* wow... can I print things in your gallery? Your work is amazing... just stunning... I'm sure I could come up with some criticism if I thought hard enough, but for now I'm quite content just to revel in the beauty of this...

:-) Brian Buckley replies: "Thank you very much!"

Well, I can't seem to get off this gallery... Drat. >_<
nifty verse scheme you got going there. How in the WORLD do you manage to seem to have such ease with expression?

Wow. Special. I love the rhyme scheme, it flows very nicely. You are skilled indeed.

The words were great, but I'm not so sure I liked the flow of it. It seemed a little awkward at times, but of course it could just be me. Otherwise, great job.

The english language is a miraculous thing, but even it has no words to describe this-this... as I said; there are no words to describe how amazing this poem truly is...
