Emma JC Nilsson replies: "Well, I don't believe in evolution, but I can still agree to the idea of relationship between species. Thank you, I'm glad you like it. ^_^"

I can't see any "beginner's mistakes" either, but if I am to be extremely peckish, I'd say that while the rest of the bird has a somewhat softened edge to the background, the legs are very sharp, which makes the eye stay there. That is a bit of a waste on the rest of the beautiful bird! I think you did a Phoenix that seems mythical, but yet plausible. Very well done! Emma JC Nilsson replies: "Yeah, you're right about the legs, I've thought about that too. I think it's partly because I painted them last (actually AFTER I did the background... -_-) and partly because the texture of the legs is naturally different than the feathers. Oh well."

The rich colours are perfect. I totally agree that a Phoenix would resemble a pheasant. We had a couple of pheasants visiting our yard during the past winter, and so often I would refer to them as a phoenix by mistake. Emma JC Nilsson replies: "It would be a true honor if you did put this on your tour. ^_^ I'm sorry about the tour problem, I hope it will be solved. Thank you for the comments!"

I generally think of the phoenix as being more or less swan-based, but I think your phoenix may be the best, design-wise anyway, that I've ever seen; or at least, the one I like the most. ^_^ Not that your execution's bad, though I have seen better; you could have used more detail, for one thing. But I'm sure you can see all that yourself, and for a beginner oil painting it's gorgeous. Emma JC Nilsson replies: "Wow, the best design..? o.o, Really? I'm honored... *bows* About the detail of the painting... I worked on this for, like, a whole summer. It didn't turn out as well as I had hoped, but I found that the longer I worked on it, it didn't get much better, but rather lost it's original charm. Oh well. Hopefully I will learn to paint better one day, but oil is difficult. Thank you for your oppinion!"

| 28 Aug 2006 | Katie Vasey | Loading...Yeeesh, where's the little gold star?! Absolutely beautiful. The phoenix in my gallery simply can't compare... Emma JC Nilsson replies: "Thanks. =) I wouldn't necessarily agree to that last comment though..." | |
| 27 Jan 2007 | Kristin A. Erickson | Loading...I really thought I commented on this... Hmm. Well I am now! This is a lovely piece of work. I love how you can put the red and green together, and make it appear elegant and fluid, not tacky. Your oil paintings are really wonderful! I want to start painting in oils myself, but I never seem to find the time. Emma JC Nilsson replies: "Oil is hard! >_< It's really trying my patience... I used the green and the red because they are complentary colors. I wanted the phoenix to stand out, but there's always a risk that it just looks unnatural. To be honest, I liked the original "sketch" background better. It was paler and more brownish. Oh well. That's what you get for painting the background last. ^^,," | |
| 17 Aug 2008 | Rea (Spyrre) Karjalainen | Loading...This is very beautifully painted! I myself like to think phoenix to resemble something like this too or maybe a pea****, but I never really liked those boring flaming eagles. This is so much more graceful! | |
| 17 Aug 2008 | Rea (Spyrre) Karjalainen | Loading...Forgot to mention that I love how realistical it looks. Feathers are awesome, so are the colours. Very good job! Makes you hope that he would have some kind of branch to sit on, though, would make it even MORE realistic.
(Hm, seems like the bird´s name in my last message got censored... Oh well, you probably can guess what I meant. ^^; ) Emma JC Nilsson replies: "*lol* It got censored... Elfwood is great. I’ve always preferred the chinese phoenix which is definately some kind of pheasant or pea****. The eagle is more middle-east tradition, I believe. I agree, a branch would have been nice."
