SciFi and Fantasy Art Unicorn Variations : The Karkadann by Aleister Lam

The fierciest of all the unicorn breed had to be that of a Karkadann. The Greek Ctesias of Cnidus mentioned that this monster with the head of a wolf and hind legs with cloven hooves and a single horn protruding from its forehead between its brows;originated from India. The word Karkadann is perhaps a Greek corruption of the word Kartajan which means Lord of the Desert.

It is such a formidable creature that even the favoured mount of Alexander the Great, Bucephalus is not his match. It is said that in one of his Asiatic Expedition, the Macedonian conqueror encountered the fabled Karkadann; it killed more that a hundred of his men. It would have gotten to Alexander if not for his trusted steed, Bucephalus who defended his master with all its might. Although it was able to fend of the deadly thrust of the the monster; Bucephalus suffered a fatal injury that would caused its life eventually. Legend had it that not long after the death of Alexander's loved equine, he fell ill and died before he could declare himself Master of the World.
