This is a depiction of the immense duel in the Silmarillion, when the first Dark Lord Melkor waged war against the free peoples. At the gates of Angband, Fingolfin challenged him in a heroic, but ultimately futile duel against the Dark Enemy...

Awesome, atmospheric piece. I saw this the exact same way... Feanor, standing against a mighty enemy in what he had to know was a hopeless battle. That is valor, and you've captured it. Bravo.

:-) Alexander J. Harron replies: "You're too kind, really. I guess this was one of my favourite Tolkien moments, because the good guy loses. For some reason all the best Tolkien bits are when the good guy loses: Boromir dies, Gandalf falls, Frodo succumbs..."

Of all the images I have seen of Melkor (and i see alot), this captures the moment the best of all. I love the spikes on his back and the red mists, it truly shows his evil in the fullest. A very wonderful picture, this is what I will be seeing every time i think of Melkor now! Perfectly done, he looks just as the greatest Dark Lord should...scary!

wow! i just read this part the other day and you drew it about the exact same way i imagined it, except mine wasn't so red, it was darker. But I like the red much better, it fits well with the fight. I was very upset after reading this part. Poor fingolfin!

Oh, if you HAD to choose your favorite character from "The Silmarrillian" or any other Tolkein Novels, Who would it be?

Melkor, *moment of silence* Truely my favorite being in any novel I have read. His power and might hidden in his dark robes which make him appear as the massive tower in which he broods...
I see it as good that he doesn't have Gond out, Melkor with robes and Gond always look awkward...
And if you drew showing Melkor's back and Fingolfin's face you wouldn't able to see Fingolfin, since Melkor towers over him ever so much. (Just defending illustrators from someone's post before mine...)
