| 5 Apr 2004 | Galenfea | Loading...Oh, poor Saruman! He looks really sad and lost here, almost as though how much he's lost just hit him. It's something we never see, either in the books or the films. Good work! Alexander J. Harron replies: "Much as I worship Christopher Lee, I felt that he wasn't bitter enough as Saruman, he seemed too cool and in control. Still awesome though." | |
| 5 May 2004 | Sara M Osth | Loading...It's nice to see another rendering of Saruman. People tend to say he's "cool" and such, which I find at least strange and possibly also slightly sad; he's really one of the great, if yet tragic, loosers of the Lord of the Rings. First, he can't withstand Sauron, then, he can't win against the ones he betrayed. A deeply tragic character, and I like the way in which this picture shows his weakness and still keeps some compassion for him. Alexander J. Harron replies: "Well, even in Tolkien's evil-is-evil and good-is-good universe, there are shades of grey to be found. Even so, while it's easy for good guys to become bad, you never see bad guys become good, and as a result I find LOTR strangely pessimistic in outlook. So you have Saruman, who started out as an angelic being of great beauty and power (like Gandalf), who succumbs to ambition and greed. That's a tragedy of Shakespearean proportions, and I feel his character is deserving of some empathy and emotional truth. Thanks for your lovely comments!" | |

| 29 Nov 2006 | Dale | Loading...I quote Nelson from the Simpsons: "HA! HA!"
Anyway...really good job. I think I remember Tolkien saying something about Saruman crying aloud when his staff is broken, and this captures exactly what I was picturing. It makes me believe that the only reason the Scourging of the Shire happened was because he was broken, and wanted some kind of revenge. | |
