Sort of like in the Air Force where the pilot says, "Bravo, Niner, Delta, Charlie." In a noisy c/o/ckpit, D,B, C, and E sound the same. Not a mistake one wants to make targeting the wrong thing. Nathanael Eisner replies: "Wow, John you are so good at logic! I should have thought of this! Well, I suppose it’s not on my list of things to ponder so I didn’t!"

But the speculation on the origin of Cap-i-tan is most likely off. It could be they got so drunk off the rum they had to make sure they said Captain right or they’d get a few lashes. Or, it’s just being lazy like the way we drop the endings of words sometimes.
Here’s more nautical trivia. You might have heard the term, "spic and span" for being clean. There is a cleaning product of the same name. This comes from the old wooden tall ships where the captain would want his crew to make the ship, spic and span. "Spics" were the spikes or nails used to hold the ship together. "Spans" were the wooden boards used in the deck floor and other parts of the ship. Nathanael Eisner replies: "That’s not funny to think that way! Ouch, I’d be certain to say it right then too!
Ah, don’t you just love the origins of modern terms!"
