The name extraplanar sounds vaguely like D&D, but it means something totally different for my stories and I only kept this specific name of "outside the planes" because of its special sonority and quite adequate meaning for what I needed: my extraplanars are beings from outside the conscious imagination, they are the beings spawned by our unconscious part, much further even from the subconscious.

Extraplanars are spawned not by rational ideas and thoughts to form imagination as we know it, but they are embodiments of our blackest fears and despairs, hidden deep inside, beyond the power of our daily conscious mind. They are tremendous, purely destructive forces and beyond any control. They reside in Chaos, the imaginary counterpart of the unconscious. They wreak havoc even without wanting it wherever they go, and the being of the Halls (which are the subconscious’ analogue in imagination) tries to keep them at bay so they don’t reach the lands of imagination.

Symbolically, they are depicted in black and red and wear bony or sharp wings, with one blade or five blade-like long feathers. Their shapes are flowing.

This particular picture shows a classical extraplanar, inside Chaos, but aspiring to go beyond, into the Halls, depicted by the specific blue-green hues.

I like the combination of red and green 1

:-) Anca Raluca Sandu replies: "Now these are two colors that you don’t often see in my pictures/stories, but it does have a lot of meaning to it in context. Extraplanars are neither good, nor bad creatures, neither hope-filled, nor desperate, they are simply tragic and purposeless in imagination and for them to see this Window so close and yet somehow forbidden to them is even more painful... still, it acts as a glimpse of happiness and the thing that fascinates them the most - it, and beyond it. Thus the heavy red/black and calm but eerie green."
