'And on a time it chanced that Oromė rode eastward in his hunting, and he turned north by the shores of Helcar and passed under the shadows of the Orocarni, the Mountains of the East. Then on a sudden Nahar set up a great neighing, and stood still. And Oromė wondered and sat silent, and it seemed to him that in the quiet of the land under the stars he heard afar many voices singing.'

JRR Tolkien: 'The Silmarillion'

I've been looking at a lot of your pictures this morning, and now I have a question about the horses and their tack: how did you decide what tack (especially the bridles) to put on different horses? I was thinking especially of Glorfindel's horse - is there a certain reason for it to wear bitless? (Haven't been reading that part for a while). I tried to remember what I imagined on different horses while reading the books, but I don't think I thought much about it, except for Roheryn whom I imagined with a plain western-style bridle with one-ear instead of browband. I did paint Faramir on a horse once, but I think i drew only a halter on that one. Do you know if any other artists have said anything about horse tack? I know Gandalf rides freestyle on Shadowfax, and I like the way Oromė does the same!

Can't realize how good this one is

This is one of the things I remember best from the Silmarillion. I like that Orome was as surprised as the Elves must have been...You capture that well here.
