Then quickly and in fear Mablung took it and set it in Beren's living hand; and Beren was roused by the touch of the Silmaril, and held it aloft, and bade Thingol receive it. 'Now is the Quest achieved,' he said, 'and my doom full-wrought'; and he spoke no more.

J.R.R. Tolkien: The Silmarillion, Of Beren and Lúthien

There is a 'making of' of this image available online, where you can see how it advanced from first sketches to the finished thing. Have a look here!

A truly beautiful image. I saw the "making of" when I was doing a search for Beleg images...wow, I never realized how much work goes into a water color!Well, I'm sure not every artist invests that much time in a watercolour painting, but I need to sketch things beforehand.

I'm not anti-pointy-eared elves.
But not TOO pointy!

Now I know why your work reminds me of Alan Lee.I follow his opinions on illustration.Let the reader think, lots of landscapes.I have the LOTR edition with his illustrations- not intrusive, highly atmospheric.

Your jaws can be somewhat sharp and pointed, there is little dark in the picture, so not enough contrast, and there's something wrong with the foliage.

But the wolf, figures, clothes, sheer QUALITY...
excelent again. The contrast is another thing difficult to achieve with the medium, because if you use too much colour, you lose the particular lightness of watercolour.

when i saw the making of this picture, i was blown away! you did such a good job... i think seeing how you started, and then seeing what the finished product looks like, really helps the viewer appreciate the picture even more. as always, WONDERFUL JOB!!!!!!Thanks a lot.

Oh, beautiful! I love the quiet dignity of this moment between Thingol and Beren - it's very much as though they've made their peace with one another. Love Elu's armour, and the Silmaril, and Mablung in his entirety. Just as I've always said *you* ought to be doing the Tolkien calendars, then I would buy them again 12

Marnie 1Well, tell this to HarperCollins Publishers.

This is really sad and quite moving. Thingol looks like he is regretting the entire Silmaril business. Great job!Well, perhaps he is ...

This is so sad! And here I'm sitting crying! So beautiful, so touching! Never read the Silmarillion, but must soon! I love your style! You are so skilled!!!Yes, do read the Sil. It's great.

I love this picture. I personally draw elves ears pointed slightly on the inside but mostly round on the outside. I hate the foot long pointy ones

this picture is awesome. Beren's and Thingol's expressions are just right, and I like Huan - how did you do all that fur in watercolors? as always, you do a great gob on the details.
I want to put this pic in a tour I'm making about Beren and Luthien, if you don't want it to be in the tour or if you have any questions please contact me.
