Then suddenly straight over the rim of their sheltering bank, a man fell, crashing through the slender trees, nearly on top of them. He came to rest in the fern a few feet away, face downward, green arrow-feathers sticking from his neck below a golden collar. His scarlet robes were tattered, his corslet of overlapping brazen plates was rent and hewn, his black plaits of hair braided with gold were drenched with blood. His brown hand still clutched the hilt of a broken sword.
It was Sam's first view of a battle of Men against Men, and he did not like it much. He was glad that he could not see the dead face. He wondered what the man's name was and where he came from; and if he was really evil of heart, or what lies or threats had led him on the long march from his home.

I love the lvl of detail in this, it's beautiful. The hair, and the leaves...

I don't see the little green feathers though 2Well, there are the green-feathered arrows sticking in his back ...

Ah, the foliage is gorgeous! I can see that you haven't lost your touch for that. Mr. Lee would be proud, and I'm very glad to see that you've begun experimenting with all kinds of new and exciting angles. The only thing that I'm not really sure of is how close or far away Sam is supposed to be. I get the sense that he should look farther away, and yet it seems as if he's just about on top of the body. This chould just be a perspective thing, or maybe my eyes are trying to justify it without considering that Sam is a hobbit and is supposed to be small. I guess that would throw the perspective off, so nevermind my ramblings and I'll go off to punish my disobedient eyes. The picture is beautiful.Well, I imagine Sam not to be far away. After all, as a ground-loving hobbit he wouldn't climb up much in a tree. And I seem to remember from the book that he's quite close to the dead Southron. But of course the perspective may be somewhat faulty, too.

Poor guy 8

Can't think of a single criticism - love Sam's curly hair, BTW. I hate it when people paint him with straight hair.Well, it's said more than once in the book that hobbits have curly hair.

Hey, I love your work. Serioulsy. Ever piece and portrait is just so very Tolkein. This is the closest to who they are in my head than any other work I've seen. But this picture is just... I saw it about a month agao and didn't leave a comment... sorry... *blushes shamfacedly* but I've been thinking about it a little as the days went by. Then I was readin the book... AGAIN... I'm on my ninteenth lap, and I seddenly went "WHOA!" and read that scene again and remembered this picture. So if that made any sense I returned to tell you that this picture is AMAZING and I love it. A lot. keep up the AMAZING work. *wanders off down the road humming a hobbit drinking song*Ho ho ho to the bottle I go? That's the one that just came to my mind 2

A wonderful picture! Sam's hair looks great, but I must say I like the Southron's armor the best. It looks very cool, almost like feathers or fishscales. The leaves are nice, but I love the way the Southorn turned out!I think fishscales are being described in the book.

This is my absolute favorite part of the lord of the rings trilogy, but it is usually brushed aside by artists. when I saw your picture it absolutely took my breath away. Congrats and most of all thank you

Among the variations from Tolkien descriptions I noticed in TLoTR movie I was a bit amazed by how the Haradrim were represented. Maybe because I was exposed to the news broadcastings at the same time 2 I don't know.

I don't remember the book clearly, but I remember I liked this passage when I read it. The first time a peaceful hobbit is introduced to the brutality of men's battle, and the thoughts and feelings which still come from his own nature. It's great you've picked up this moment and painted it. And you've executed it very well.
