One morning as asleep she lay upon the moss, as though the day too bitter were for gentle flower to open in a sunless hour, Beren arose and kissed her hair, and wept, and softly left her there. ‘Good Huan,’ said he, ‘guard her well! In leafless field no asphodel, in thorny thicket never a rose forlorn, so frail and fragrant blows. Guard her from wind and frost, and hide from hands that seize and cast aside; keep her from wandering and woe, for pride and fate now make me go.’

J.R.R. Tolkien: The Lays of Beleriand, The Lay of Leithian, Canto X, lines 3228 – 3241

this looks very similar to a piece by Alan Lee in Merlin's Dreams, but even if it was influenced by same you have certainly made it your own in a creative and beautiful way. great job!Unfortunately I haven't managed yet to get a copy of Merlin Dreams. I'd really like to see that picture you mentioned.

Very amazing stuff. I just love this. Are you selling prints or anything, cos I'd buy one.
(About Huan. While I seem to remember reading that he was a wolfhound, I also remember that he was bred by Orome, on of the Valar, so I doubt that he would have looked all that normal anyway.)I have prints of other images but not this one, I'm afraid.

You know what song reminds me of this picture? No. 8 on the Titanic soundtrack, "Unable to Stay, Unwilling to Leave". I always think of this picture when I hear it, and it makes me cry. You did an amazing job in painting this emotional scene.Thank you very much.

That's a beautiful picture. Was the positioning of the girl hard to do? It looks like it would have been, but this comes from someone who isn't the greatest artist. Very, very beautiful.Yes, it was. This painting is actually my second attempt at this scene. In the first version Lúthien lay differently, but I wasn't happy with the composition.

Beutilful painting, It has to be my favorite painting based on of J.R.R Tolkien's middle earth. Great detail in the emotion of the scene.

Wow. Why on earth has this not gotten a mod’s choice? I love the story of Beren and Luthien, and there’s just so much emotion in this piece.
