When a friend of mine in Elftown decided to run a Flight of the Phoenix contest, I knew exactly what I wanted to paint for it.

And thus, Emberwing came about. She's a gryphon with a phoenix half (I call it by the goofy name of a "gryphoex").

I tell ya, my hand was cramped by the time I was done drawing all of those lines for the feathers :-/ I like the outcome, but I think it's more work in the wings than I want to do again.

I like the background on this one. My husband described it as looking like it was leaving the planet or flying very high above it. And I agree, it's what it looks like. It's not what I was aiming for, lol! It was originally just supposed to be a sunrise at an angle. Ah well... I guess I got a happy accident out of it :D

Beautiful work! I love those sleek, long headfeathers, and the dark fur of its body. That tail tuft looks wonderfully like a tongue of flame.

Very pretty! The phoenix half really glows!

The details are amazing! Great artwork!

Nice, the torso is that of a leopard, not that of a lion just like the classical gryphon. I also like the colour of the spots and the fur's background have been swapped in contrast to the real-life leopard.

I like this alot. The detail in the wings is excellent and the black on it’s body gives an impression of burnt out embers, sort of like the balrog. My only criticism is the moon, as it is quite bright and a bit distracting, I think this could be absolved if you made it a crescent moon, or perhaps had part of the wing infront of it. Infact I have found putting feathers or fur infront of a sun/moon/light looks quite impressive because it gives you a chance to draw their translucency which adds to the overall effect. Anyhow, good picture 2
