His crystal might be an improvised torch, so to speak, but even if this troll should be able to see in the dark, it would still be a pretty, shiny piece of treasure.

Shiny treasure, light source, AND handy bludgeoning tool. For a troll, the perfect trifecta. I love the monster design... a very nice take on the classic "troll" concept.
