I found a whole bunch of different descriptions of Yggdrasil and the placement of the Nine Worlds and it's all very confusing! It took me a LONG time, but here is my take on the Norse Universe. Unfortunately, I had to shrink this pic down from its 15x20 size, so there is alot of loss in detail. I know people are going to start nitpicking, but TOUGH!!! According to legend, the ash tree grew from Ginnungagap. At its base, a serpent chewed one of its roots, while at the top of the tree sat an eagle with a falcon between his eyes. Above the tree was the North Star. Yggdrasil's roots and branches spread throughout the planes of existence. At the base of the tree is the Well of Urd (little white bowl) guarded by the Norns. The gods would travel down Bifrost the Rainbow Bridge everyday for their daily meetings. Bifrost also connected Asgard with the human world of Midgard. Worlds on the first level: Vanaheim - Home of the Vanir gods (blue), Asgard - Home of the Aesir gods (gold), and Alfheim - Home of the Light Elves (green). Worlds on the second level: Midgard - Home of Man (yes, I used the planet Earth) and that's the Midgard Serpent emerging from the waters and surrounding Midgard. The rocky terrain surrounding Midgard is Jotunheim (Home of the Giants). Then there's Svartalfheim - Home of the Dark Elves (green and black) and Nidavellir - Home of the Dwarves (I chose a volcano type of terrain to represent their forges). Worlds on the third level: Nifelheim - Land of Ice and Mist also home of Hel, Goddess of the Dead (white terrain). The fiery land behind it is Muspellheim - Home of the Fire Giants and ruled by the Fire Giant, Surt. I chose to 'dome' some of the worlds to give them a sense of atmosphere. Yes, I know there are two more wells that Yggdrasil's branches go to ... I have the roots going into Jotunheim and Nifelheim ... if you want to see the wells themselves or any of the other animals/beings that inhabit Yggdrasil, call your local travel agent! Hehehehe! Thanks!

You forgot the squirrel that brings messages between the eagle and the serpent at the bottom, makin’ the other one mad. And where the heim did the serpent at the roots come from? If Jormungandr, the WOrld Serpent, was the spawn of Loki, where did the one at the roots come from?

Very good art piece! You know, recently I’ve been having this idea of mixing the cosmology of the greeks with that of the norse! Picture it, the entire cosmos as a large sphere, with the upper half of the universe as Uranus/Ouranos(the sky) and in the middle and center of the universe as a flat disk is Gaia/Terra/Midgard/Middle-Earth(the earth), with the trunk of , with Asgard, Vanaheim, and Alfheim in its bows, growing out of the center of her with Mt. Olympus beside it. Surrounding Gaia/Midgard would be Oceanus/Okeanos/Pontus(the encircling the world ocean) and surrounding him, bordering the edges of the entire universe would be the realm of Jotunheim. The lower half of the universe, beneath the earth, the ocean, and the realm of the giants and trolls, in the higher roots of Yggdrasil, are the realms of the dwarves and dark elves, and even lower still at the end of the roots are the realms Musplheim/Tartarus, and Nifleheim/Hel/Hades/The Underworld. and either within the bounderies of the sky, or beyond it is Gimle/Heaven/The Elysium Fields.

And inhabiting all these realms are Titans, Olympian Gods, Aesir Gods, Vanir Gods, Humans/Mortals, Demigods, Light-Elves, Dark-Elves, Wood-Nymphs, River Nymphs, Wood-Gods, River-Gods, Tritons/Nereids/Oceanids/Merpeople, Satyrs, Sileni, Fauns, Centaurs, Minotaurs, Trolls, Fire Giants, Frost Giants, Jotuns Gigantes, Cyclopes, Dwarves, Harpies, Erotes(winged gods based off of Eros/Cupid), Psychai(butterfly winged equivilants of erotes), Gorgons, Hecatonchires, Nymphs/Goddesses and Gods of the skies, mountains and underworld, and the three Fates being synonymous with the Norns.

I have recently found my path as an Asatraur. I must say your artwork is most beautiful. I was drawn here by the image of Freya, but looking at all images, I do love them much. Thank you for this beautiful study.1515

I knew the serpent was spawned from Loki but he also spawned Hel, and Fenrir the great Wolf. Jormungandr however was the dragon chewing at the roots of Yggdrasil.
