"Ivory-Toothed Hummingflit" by T A O Crauford

The ivory-toothed hummingflit (Ebursahn ebursahn) is a medium-sized hummingflit of about 4.6 inches long and 12 grams in weight. They are a species of the southern mountain tropics, mostly above 2500 m elevation.

This particular hummingflit, of all the flits in the genus Ebursahn, has the longest teeth of any animal in relation to its size. The top two incisors are fused together and extend horizontally out of its mouth along with the bottom two incisors, creating a 4.8 inch long tubular bill-like structure known as bill-teeth. Hummingflits within the genus Ebursahn have bill-teeth ranging in sizes from 1/2 inch to 4.8 inches.

The ivory-toothed hummingflit is highly adapted to feed on flowers with very long corollas. Most of these flowers hang straight down, and the hummingflit comes up from below to feed on their nectar and pollinate them.
