SciFi and Fantasy Art Shadow of the Forest by Tiina Aumala

Tapio, the lord of the forest, son of Louhi, father of the seeda, immortal among his mortal kin. In the early days of the world he hunted down the fearsome Elk of Tuonela and still wears its antlers on his head as a mark of a pact made with Tuoni, the Goddess of death, which granted him a life without death. He shows himself to men during the midsummer, when he takes part in the festivities that celebrate Päivö, the god of the sun, who helped Tapio in his quest to catch the Elk of Tuonela. He knows the fathers and mothers of all animals and is the teacher of hunters. It is unwise to anger him, for while he helps those that follow his ways, his enamies will find their traps empty and no animals will ever cross their path again.

I've only recently resumed my personal studies on mythology, and this illustration of Tapio is one of the ones that made me go searching out for the less well known (at least where I live) mythologies of the world. I was intrigued by the story, and this image, so thanks for the inspiration to go searching for something I might never have known about.

28 Feb 2009	Ross Ben Taylor	Loading... Great image! I love how in he description he turns up to festivities! I hope he doesn’t turn up looking like that, he might scare away the others! Great use of colour! But in my opinion it’d be great to see more of the character than just a silhouette.
