I was thinking about an amazon scout, in just the minimum of clothes and light weapons, carrying maybe 2 days' worth of food and some vital neccesities in her bag, sitting on a clifftop taking some time to enjoy the sunrize before she gets ready to watch for the enemy troops. Let me preempt any 'where's her other breast' comments by pointing out that according to legend amazon women cut off one breast because it got in the way of drawing a bow. Wacom tablet in Painter 7 and Photoshop 7. This is a new, improved and final version.

First off I love this picture. It's true, I hate the myth but you drew it to the myth so kudos for you.

(This isn't directed to the Artists but to the community in general)
To bring back the breast topic (cause I need to throw in my 2 cents) It makes more sense that IF, and that's a big if, the breast did get in the way it would be alot easier to just bind it flat then to cut it off. Think of how many warriors would have died cutting it off. Infections and such. It doesn't make sense.

To the artist. This picture is wonderful. Even thou I hate the myth this sticks true to it and it's done very well, no Amazon Bimbo's here. Great job.

Beautiful pic!

The work "amazon" is derived from the greek "a-mazos" which means "without a breast"

so stop arguing and just enjoy this beautiful piece of art...

i wouldn't want to get my boob cut off. I like them, thier my friends....that sounded wrong for some reason. But yes, i like the drawing painting thing. It's real looking, and their aren't too many artists who could pull off real looking in Elfwood. Award # 3!

Kay folks, they did cut off their breast, keep in mind that amazonians shot bows entirely different that we are used to, they shot it from their cheek as well, but they also shot it from their shoulder (ie. shooting a gun from the waist) and just like some of you have problems shooting and the string brazing your hand, they had problems with the breast, at any rate, like many other things, they developed a way around it and they didnt need to cut it off, but it is tradition, and nothing it lost in the name of tradition. Keep your sexist comments ie. I bet a man thought of this. To yourself, it makes you look even more ignorant.

Nice and realistic, I like those who follow the mythos.
BUT
I dont think they could cut off a breast because it is a vital organ for cleaning the blodd.

Just discovered your gallery, you've got some talent and a nice touch of various mythologies in your works. 1

I would have to agree that the cutting off a breast seems like more of a popularized legend than fact.

The Wikipedia article is pretty informative: (though many will remind that when reading the wiki for the facts, check the sources)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazons

It does mention the a+mazos (without breast) interpretation of the word, but calls it a popular (false) etymology. It attributes the name to the "Iranian ethnonym, *ha-mazan-, originally meaning 'warriors'". There will probably always be plenty of people who attest to the truth of the legend though, and who knows, maybe some of them actually did that. "It is conjectured that the Amazons were originally the temple-servants and priestesses (hierodulae) of this [Artemis] goddess; and that the removal of the breast corresponded with the self-mutilation of the god Attis and the galli, Roman priests of Cybele."

Anyway, bravo for your depiction of the legend, though I don't really understand the stomach folds (I would think a scout would be extremely fit), and am not really one to praise just for making her look more non-stereotypical and imperfect.

"instead of blond and buxom sex kittens in valkiry cups that are usually portrayed as amazons"

Hey now, I'm sure they were just following the "a- (intensive) + mazos, breast, 'full-breasted'" interpretation of the word! =P

...I come in peace...
The face is amazing! Its striking and bold. Very amazonian. The body is fantastic - I love all the scars and wounds. They look real. The pose, the background... it's all amazing. You've truly captured the essence of a warrior woman.

Everything is so great! It's wonderful! But i decided to be a pain in the neck and say that the bow-string are usually took off the bow if you are not in battle or are not going to shoot...2

Hi;

FYI: HotForWords on YouTube published
an article that stated that the word
"Amazon" was Folk Etymology (root of word)
and that may have been a mockery for fierce
Iranian Warriors with the name hamazon or
similar.

To comment about the Amazons removing one breast: The legend is not that they amputated the breast, but that they burned it off. The burning would likely have killed any bacteria or viruses that could have infected a cut.
