Written in my junior year of high school, I present for your scrutiny, this awkward bit of prose in all of its unedited glory. Many apologies in advance... :)

Ballad of the Witty Young Squire

One glowing morn, on a lone forest road
Traveled two knights. Their squire made three.
They did not expect on such a glorious day
To see a maiden weeping under a tree.

They questioned her gently of her evident sorrow.
“No joy”, said she, “shall this day bring.
For down in yonder rabbit hole
Hides the troll who stole my prized ring.”

The first knight said, “Do not fret, young maid.
For with water I shall drown the troll out!”
But being in fact that trolls do not breath,
His plan did not produce the foul lout.

“Fear not, m’lady. For I have a plan.”
Said knight number two with a grin.
He thrust a long spear into the dark hole,
But no bottom was reached within.

“Oh dear!”, cried the maid. “Now what to do?
Tis useless. I have lost all hope.”
Being yet quiet, but now quite bold,
T’was the squire who thus spoke...

“I think that this is a peculiar thing.
Save strength for other times.
Because the secret with a cunning troll
Is thus, they cannot resist wine.”

The keen young squire ran to his horse
And from his saddlebags brought
A flask of wine from a vintage year
And poured a generous draught.

Quick was he, the thieving old troll,
But thus, not quick enough.
For as he peeked his tiny head out,
The young squire grabbed him by the scruff!

He wiggled and squiggled in the squire’s firm grasp,
But alas, his efforts were in vain.
For as the young squire snatched back the ring,
The troll’s scheme was finally slain.

“This day”, laughed the maid “I have found by his deeds,
A champion right here where I sit.
For where others have failed through force of strength,
A young squire has won with sheer wit!”

Ooh~! Love it. I spotted no errors, except at the very beginning... It didn’t sound quite right... but oh well, if there were no mistakes, no art would be unique and art would siece to exist. ^.^ the infinite wisdom of artists.

:-) Barbara J Wickham replies: "Thank you! I’m so happy you like it!

The whole thing is a bit awkward, but that’s what makes me so fond of it. It was the first time I had attempted any kind of poerty, beyond the occasional haiku or dirty limerick. *hehehe*"

Aaw! *second comment awkward high school wiggle* Barbara, that’s way cute! You followed some of the most important rules of a good fairy tale, namely the rule of threes, the rule of the youngest, and the rule of wit-over-strength. I love it! It fits quite nicely here on your shelf. 2

:-) Barbara J Wickham replies: "*squeals* The funny part is that this poem started out so different; more formal, less humorous. Yet, with my struggles to find words that rhymed the whole piece became what you see here today. I guess my subconscious steered me in the right direction and pulled all my classic fairy tale lore out of the archives in my childhood brain. As is the occasion with my art, the less I think about it the better it turns out. *lol*"

It’s nice to see the squire as the hero for a change, LOL! It might be unpolished but I think more "unpolished" poems should show this much talent and originality...and a controlled amount of lack of polish can be charming.

:-) Barbara J Wickham replies: "Thank you so much, Heidi! What a flattering comment! 1

I’ve always loved stories where the underdog wins the day. Reluctant heros are my favorite characters.

I wish I was still in touch with one of my high school friends. She was a very talented writer and she had a collection of stories where she re-wrote a lot of classic fairy tales in which the princesses ended up saving themselves, and sometimes the prince too! *lol*

She was very inspiring to me in trying to create art and stories outside the box. "

I love this, it’s kind of fun, and I love the last line. You always expect the night to always win the maiden. But nope, this time being macho and feeling like they are better doesn’t work for them. I like the thought of the unlikely hero. Nice job!

:-) Barbara J Wickham replies: "I’ve always been fond of the underdog or the unassuming heros. Along with that, it’s quite satisfying to see the uppity ones get their egos spanked! 1

Thank you for reading, Samantha! "
