Beth Kelleher

Beth is a web designer, currently residing in the Bay Area. She has been drawing since she could hold a crayon and took art all through high school and briefly in college. One of the first books that was read to her, was The Hobbit. This early exposure to fantasy has colored her outlook on life ever since.

My love of scifi and fantasy stems largely from my parents, in particular my father, who read the Hobbit to me when I was only four years old. I cannot remember a time when the fantastical has not been a part of my life and this has served to inspire, shape and color the way I write and draw. Drawing and writing have always been a means of expressing the vivid images and stories that I have running around in my head. As a child growing up in a foreign country, my inner world was very important to me and when I was sad or alone, I would retreat there for a time until I felt like I could emerge again. As I've grown older, that world has faded somewhat, as I've become more socially adept. Yet, the dreams are still there, bubbling beneath the surface, waiting to come out.

I took Advacement Placement art classes throughout high school and prepared a portfolio to apply for Art School, but then never submitted it anywhere. A part of me still wishes that I had gone through that training, and yet I just can't stop drawing. Forces of nature, the small hidden things all around us, the multiple facets of the human face -- these are all the things that inspire me and spur me to draw.

Links to other artists I admire:
Min Rho / Adele Sessler / Yeechi Chen / Veronica Lacquement / Stephanie Pui-Mun Law / Matt Rhodes / Claire Salvatori / Wen Hsu / Tracy Butler

Yes, I do take commissions for free and paid character portraits, per discussion with client.

Beautiful artwork, Love your elves. I'd love to see more. Keep it up. Short and basic I know but can't express it any other way *S*

Lovely work Beth! Fathers are a wonderful inspiration are they not, my dad also fed my love of fantasy by reading me the hobbit i dont know how old i was when he started it was something he always read to me, but anyway I wanted to say I love your stuff, you have a unique style and flow, it is very gracefull...

I just wanted to say that you draw elves with their natural beauty and grace, something that i have found is really quite hard, but you hve done it perfectly!

I would simply like to say that due to your lack of shading techique (no smudging doesn't couny) and overall mis-portportional faces and bodies, I think that you should take an art class.

:-) Beth Kelleher replies: "While it is true that most of my pieces look smudged, this does not mean that they were not shaded. I do most of my work on a moving train and I don't have fixative with me so everything gets smudged eventually, even if it was meticulously cross-hatched to begin with.
That said, I do prefer a softer look and sometimes overblend. As for proportions, yes, that's something I'm still working on and every time I draw something I strive to improve. Practice makes perfect. Sadly I can't afford to take another figure-drawing class, though I hope to be able to again someday."
