No one ever notices them pass by. And when they wake the next day, all they remember is the whirl of adventure and the clicking of a horse's hooves...

Horse-Drawn Dreams

Just a canter away from midnight
Stands the conductor of dreams,
Fastening on the horseshoes of fantasy
While the silvery moonlight gleams;
He guides you onto the carriage
And lights up his mahogany pipe;
The North Star's wink now tells him
That the time of your dream is ripe.

Whoosh! You fly in a flurry of light
You barely notice the time go by,
Unicorns carry you from dusk to dawn
Whilst fairies weave lullabies!
Voices and stories are slurred in your mind
But leaving the elder daydreams behind,
Let the muscles and speed
Of these fantastical steeds
Sweep you away from reality's grind.

But somehow the journey is over
And you are left in a daze on your bed,
But next time you travel to heaven
You'll take the Dream Carriage instead.

'ello. First comment warning, nits (good or bad) come first with as detailed an explanation as I can give, overall comment follows.

Fastening on the horseshoes of fantasy <- that line struck me as too long. I know you've an irregular syllable count in this and for the most part it works really well, but I stumbled a bit with this line. Unfortunately, metre is probably my weakest point in poetry, so I'm at a loss to explain better. It could be just me too, though, so don't hesitate to get a second opinion on it. That's also all I have for you in terms of nits.

I enjoyed reading this. After reading a fair amount of metrically demanding poems during the semester, the freedom and almost frivolous use of it here is a very welcome and pleasant change. It seem to suit the topic of children's dreams as well. It reads very playfully without being childish.

The idea in it is gorgeous and I love the subtlety with which you've portrayed that idea, not given it very clear substance right away, but gradually building the idea in the mind. Very lovely little piece. Certainly brightened up my evening.

*applauds* Beautiful, evocative little piece. ^-^ Well done!
