Robert ´Bobby´ Holz

Robert 'Bobby' Holz

Robert has a hard time remembering how to walk in the morning. He spends most of his day drilling away with a mechanical pencil on paper and watching the world drift by around him. 'It's always the same day,' he says. 'But right now I like the way this one day looks and feels.'

Fourth Decade!!! My existence has hit a substantial milestone. I don't know what to think about it. Um. Yeah.

Heh. Let's see. Well, as it says above, my name is Robert Holz, though I'd really rather you call me Bobby. I'm a Houstonian by birth. I've lived there most of my life, save four years spent in North Carolina when I was in the military, and six months living in Austin, where I reside now. The pilgrimage to Austin was a result of Hurricane Rita. God bless her. I needed to get out of Houston. Don't get me wrong. I have good memories of Houston... I just don't care to make new ones.Drawing hit me when I was four years old. You can thank the 1979 sci-fi movie 'The Black Hole', and my Uncle Frank for that. Mostly my Uncle Frank. He made the NEATEST stuff (the only word that sums up all of his creations) from spare plastic model parts, plastic plates, and whatever else he could utilize. Ahem... err... anyway, he also drew very well. I picked up my first drawing instincts from watching the way he illustrated his mind to paper. That is, whenever he'd let me look over his shoulder. Gradeschool left me a solitary child, not being the type to jump right into a crowd and make friends, so I kept myself entertained by doodling whatever I could. Then as time wore on, and it occured to me that I was becoming no less shy, what were once 'doodles' became 'full time obsessions.' Down went my grades (from lack of homework, mind you... I'm no dummy! [wry grin]) ...and up went my drawing skills. You see, when you can draw, people see you as a tool before they can consider how you'd work as a punching bag. And, at the time, I prefered to be THOUGHT of as a tool. Hell, I'd even let myself be used from time to time to keep from being on anyone's bad side.

At some point, I grew a backbone, stopped drawing to be in the favor of others, and began to do my own thing. Seven or eight years ago, that 'thing' became fantasy art. I love it. I breath it. Don't ask me if I know this artist or that... chances are I don't. I'm not the sort to spend hours searching out famous artwork on random whims. On occassion I flip through the book titles at Narnes and Boble, but that is usually an act forged from being idle for too long and not sure where to go next.

If you have ANY questions or comments, I encourage you to email me. I do read the comments here, and have been spending more time trying to respond to them, but chances are you'll get a much quicker response if you just shoot me a line directly.

you do some intricate and amaising drawings, and dragons in some interesting situations... it's always nice to meet a felow artist who is in to dragons... troully you are very skilled, but there is one small thing that I noticed after browsing your dragon pics is that they all seem to have wings that seem to be a bit small... But that's just my thought as I like dragons with really big wings.

ANyways, I was wondering if you could possibly stop by my page and give me some constructive criticism on how to improve my own drawings and dragon designs... please, any help would be greattly apreciated because I am in diere need to improve! ( p.S. I would ask, if you have time to visit my deviantart gallery, because my newer works are there... if you ever decide to help me, the link is here on my elfwood page... )

:-) Robert 'Bobby' Holz replies: "Give me some time. I've very little time to spend, but judging from what I've already seen, you're well on your way to making your name for yourself as a fantastic artist."

Hey Bobby!

Very, very nice pencil-work you have here! Pencilwork is what I love the most (and so I try to make some as well, I would be very honoured if you would like to visit my gallery). Your draqons are very inspirational.

Jeroen

:-) Robert 'Bobby' Holz replies: "What do my dragons inspire you to do? Burn villages? Ask riddles? Eat maidens? What? Tell me, damn you! Tell me!"

Not only are you amazingly talented, you are uber-cute to boot.

My son is also a gifted artist (and gorgeous, too). (No false modesty here.)

Best of luck in future endeavors.

:-) Robert 'Bobby' Holz replies: "Thanks a-much. Is your son going to school for art? Or perhaps already making his way in the world with it?"

Dragons, figures, backgrounds! It doesn't matter, you have mastered them all. Truly impressive.

:-) Robert 'Bobby' Holz replies: "Correct me if I'm wrong, Sammy, but should you not be a master first before you can tell someone else that they are a master as well? I'm no master. I'm no amateur. I sit comfortably in the middle. "

Srsly, I wish people would stop commenting on the size of your dragons’ wings. Give the Physics lessons a rest, peeps! After all, if you drew the wings at the "proper" scale, there wouldn’t be much else in the picture! Two words: artistic license. So there.

I’m sorry for venting. I just think that your work is lovely. You put so much detail into the faces and the scales of your dragons; they’re very striking.

Keep up the wonderful work!

61 Robert 'Bobby' Holz replies: "Well, recently I haven’t been keeping up with the work at all. We’ll see what the future holds, eh?"

Your image "Lets remain spectators" is...compare it with the vampirehunter of matthew k. nelson of Galery 25 and you’ll know what I mean, why its hard to find words

61 Robert 'Bobby' Holz replies: "Nope. Don’t know what you mean."

hello! greate work but it needs some color... I youse prismacolor pencils they are expencive but they are a good art tool- A

61 Robert 'Bobby' Holz replies: "I’m going to default to my usual response for people suggesting I use color... I’m a monochromatic artist because I want to be a monochromatic artist. Leaves a little more to the imagination, imho."
