SciFi and Fantasy Art Fingernail Fairy, AKA the Keratin Elemental by Jennifer A. Cabbage

When I was a little kid (and I do mean little) my dad told me this story of how there were these fairies that went around the world collecting fingernail clippings. They were using the clippings to build a boat, and when they were finished, they would sail the fingernail boat down a river and bring about Ragnarok, and the end of the world. Needless to say, I've been very diligent about hunting down fingernail clippings ever since. This was done in watercolors with a bit of Paint Shop Pro to create a dark, misty effect. I created it for the Bifrost (appropriately enough) alternative elementals project, kind of combining my dad's long-ago tale with the idea that toenails, fingernails, hooves, horns, etc are all made of the same substance (keratin) and it's really this unliving thing- not alive- hence the Death-like aspect of the elemental/fairy.

20 Oct 2005	E. Torrens	Loading... There actually is a Norse myth about Ragnorok that says something about Loki's army of dead people coming to fight the gods in a boat made out of fingernails. I could have the details wrong though, it's been a while since I read that story. Anyway - this picture has a very sombre atmosphere. I like the sad, lost expression on the fairy's face and the muted, dark colours you used.
