This image started life as the second oil painting that I ever attempted. The sky was ok, and the water, and the trees, but somehow I managed to neglect putting in any reflection of trees, and for some reason I put this blazing big bonfire under the trees on the right and tried to light a couple trees and their branches with firelight. It looked pretty bad. So, the other day I scanned in this 11-year old painting (done on that horrid student art canvas, canvas wrapped around cardboard, shudder), and started playing with it. I got rid of the fire and the horrible firelit trees, and put in some tree-covered hill reflections. I looked at it, and decided to add another fire back in but this one done with PSP (5) tubes. Then, for the fun of it, I added the mage, whose face and arm are constructs of Poser 4, fudged with his robe, and added his flying sparks, which are, again, PSP tubes. It's not great, but I had fun piecing this together. ;)

That looked like oil paint! This is a very beautiful picture, i find it very captivating...it reminds me of camping in the woods!

:-) Jennifer A. Cabbage replies: "Absolutely! It's somewhat based on a place I've gone camping a couple of times."

Proof that one should never toss out what they have done before. It's sort of like realism without the realism and it makes it very much your own style. I love how the sky turned out. Reminds me of my home...*wonders off homesick*

:-) Jennifer A. Cabbage replies: "Realism without the realism... yeah, that's a really good way of putting it. Can I use that if I ever have need to? 12 And I totally agree about not throwing old things out- I was just going through my high school portfolio again the other day, and discovered that I now really like an oil pastel painting of a bluejay that I used to absolutely loathe. I guess my criteria and preferences change a bit, with time. "

this is a wonderful painting! I think you've done a marvelous job on the fire and the figure holding the sparks. If I hadn't read the description I would have taken this for a traditionally completed painting. I'm glad you've shared this with us!

:-) Jennifer A. Cabbage replies: "Thanks! I tried hard to make the figure match the style of the painting- wasn't sure how well I'd managed, though. 12"
