| 13 Jan 2005 | Demetreus | 1) If no piece of art is ever finished, only abandoned, how do you know when to stop working on it? 2) In your mind, have any of your completed projects ever approached the perfection with which you initially envisioned the piece, before you actually began working on it? Caitlin Shae Baxter replies: "It's hard to answer your question because art is... alive. Matthew's art teacher refers to art as an action, as apposed to a noun. (Art is the action, artwork is the product.) It's such a dynamic, versatile process... as I said before, it denies logical evaluation, so it doesn't have a definite start or end. As for knowing when to stop... it's something that all artists struggle with, I think. Sometimes you have a definite feeling that it is finished, and sometimes you just have to stop before you wreck it. As for approaching perfection, I don't think anything ever turns out the way I expect it to. However, some pieces manage to express the feeling I was aiming for, and at that point I feel satisfied." | |
| 15 Jan 2005 | Demetreus | Your pieces seem very deliberate (i.e. not throwing your pencil at a sheet of paper and calling it art), but they also seem guided by a visceral intuition that lets you know that what you're creating cannot be accomplished by "overthinking" it. Do you do much planning before you set out to create something (preliminary sketches, photos, journals, etc.)? | |
