Psyche’s Longing is about the Greek myth told by Ovid of Cupid and Psyche. Briefly, the story is that Psyche is one of three sisters, the youngest and most beautiful in all the land. The goddess of love and desire Venus is jealous that her temples are neglected, so she orders her son Cupid, or Eros to make her fall in love with the most hideous creature. When he sees her, he falls in love with her himself, not completing his mother’s revengeful task. When she learns this, in rage, she puts a spell on Psyche such that men can still go to adore her, but none will ask for her hand in marriage or want her any longer. Psyche must then live in this desolation and loneliness. It is during this time that this poem from her point of view takes place. (5-30-03)

 ~Psyche’s Longing ~

O Dreaded Neptune; grant me thy acumen of thine undulating waves, and thy nadir of the deep

O Grandest Athena, lend me your keener wisdom and able cunning

O Gentle Artemis, pour thrice upon me thy sweetest wine of your virtue

O Fairest Venus, teach me the ways of thy charm and allure

O Wicked Hera, attest to me th’ arts of your austerity’s shrewdness

O Naive Persephone, surmount me with your bleakest winters come

O swift nymphs of the wood, sly sirens of the sea, thy graces and thy fates, aid my sorrow here anew!

Hath I lived but a score to breed a life to lack thy love so desolate?

Hark! Tis no love at all that calls upon my name, nor leads me down thy path

Oh, how I long to travel there! To taste the love that lingers long denied

Intent here now, I am yet unknown to men, by the curse’s name I know yet not

Do glower close, oh faintest outrage! For do your flames doth singe me now?

To dream and dance, To faint and pine, To smolder doth but I shall forth –

Prithee, Peace, for thee mine languish strains and bleeds, for you my heart abides.

wow that was beautiful, but just one thing, when Psyche called to the gods, she used their greek names, except Venus, since their all in greek, maybe you should change Venus to Aphrodite

yes, neptune vs. poseidon, and venus vs. aphrodite.

I am the biggest fan of mythology, and did a search through Elfwood and you came up.

You write brilliantly. I was a tad stuck on the fact that you wrote in shakespearean dialect, yet it was written as an ancient greek bard. Nothing big, but I really like this piece. I have been trying to work up a story or poem about the elicit affair between Ares and Aphrodite, or something about Echo and Narcissus. This was truly inspirational.

Cheers.
