2002. Part of my newest series of portraits of elven women in graphite. The title was a bit a trouble spot for me, 'Aquatic Elf' didn't work for me because she doesn't have gills. so I chose the semi-parodoxical title.

Ah, obviously some subspecies of which I was previously unaware! The whole type-of-elf thing is getting stupid, especially as they're really the wrong species for that to happen to. Ludicrous biological and social overspecialisation is just not elvish; if their identity is so fragile and unsustainable a thing that they get deformed by every slight shift in conditions, they are not the species I took them for, and frankly, come on the orcs. Quite right to take the mick out of it. The drawing itself, from her complexion she's too young and pretty to have such a serious look on her face, and I hope she's not worried about anything more immediate than being evolutionarily outpaced by Uruk-hai.

:-) D. Cameron Calkins replies: "What you are refering to here is the fairly outdated concept of "race", since "species" includes the inability or difficulty in interbreeding as one the the defining criteria. I personally, am not a proponent of "racial" thought. Use humans as an example. While there are certain physical traits or at least a tendency for them, in decreet populations, who also share common societal lexicon, we can also interbreed, as we are all members of the same species. Over time, as decreet populations become less isolated and begin to mate and breed outside their communities, the physical traits in the total population will become intermingled, and with increasing global communication, societal distinctiveness will become less as well. Similarly, I never thought of most elves as being of either diffent subspecies or "races". That being said, an aquatic elf having gills would certainly be a different sub-species, as it has adapted to underwater living, which would separate it enough from other elves to be a different species. Of course, all this is biological theory and the existance of magic in fantasy settings mucks up the whole concept of species, with Tolkein human-elves crosses being able to make a choice between immortality and mortality, and such."
