Anyways, nice picture. Ana Teresa 'Catwings' Campaniço replies: "If they say Medusa and the others were females then there must be males around too ;D"
| 22 Feb 2009 | Jeanette M Thomas | Loading...Mythologically, gorgons, the fates, the graces, harpies, dryads and nymphs were only female. Centaurs and satyrs are depicted only as male. That is if you want to be mythologically correct, (not counting Walt Disney who changed myths and fairy tales at will).
Remember these were icons used in ancient religions and beliefs, shaped as they were for reasons in that day and age. They were depicted as having been created as they were, not as part of a race of beings. They did not procreate as such - for instance Satyrs mated with nymphs, not lady Satyrs. They were not considered fantasy in that age, but depictions of the forces of nature. Like they would never consider Posiedon as female, nor Demeter the earth mother as male.
However, this is Elfwood, where fantasy rules, and this is another day and age, and here in the wood there need be no relation to "ancient truths" - it is as the artist sees it. For instance, there are many pictures of love afairs between angels and demons, which would not be possible from a religious-mythical point of view.
The only problem I have is the (to me) confusion of the old meanings and images with the RPG avatars and images, but that’s my problem. The "new" mythos produces some wonderful art work.
