The Last Dragon

In the cold darkness it lay,
Far from the light of day.
Curled in the dank of its lair,
With knife teeth and claws to tear.

Looking back on yesteryear,
Days long gone that seemed so near,
When kings were cruel and knights bold.
Days fading with memories old.

A soul searching for a magic lost,
Sitting in a world like cold frost.
Where the unicorn of dreams,
Is now lost or so it seems.

The dragons are now fading fast.
Lying dormant he is the last.
Soon his race will be long gone,
The world's lost but the planet lives on.

He will face the end alone,
In his lair, his prison, his home.
As the very last dragon dies
So this era's dawn fill the skies.

Aww! I like dragons and now there's only one?? I love the kind of sombre/magical theme and rhythm there is to this poem and I expecially like the use of winter in the poem. It always symbolises the end or the beginning I think so good use of symbolism.

1 Carolin Emily 'Dragoncat' Southern replies: "  Thankyou for commenting. Here, have a first comment cookie! *gives you a cookie* I don't know how many, or how few dragons there really are... if dragons exist, which they may or may not do. symbolism in poetry, it gives the poems more depth and allows the writer to convey more without writing reams and reams and reams of poetry. ~§~ Carolin ~§~"

Very nicely done. I'm just a tad partial to dragons, so I read this first. It has a nice flow to it and rhymes well. I got a nice visual with this.
I enjoyed this very much.

Well I'm impressed. A bit somber for my liking, but this definitely has some great imagery. I thought it tended to be quite evocative. I felt a little bit frightened of the fierce dragon at first, but by the end felt quite sorry for him.
A fantastic job and definitely a worthy addition to your collection

1 Carolin Emily 'Dragoncat' Southern replies: "  Thankyou for commenting. I am happy that you liked poem. They do tend to be a bit on the depressing and/or somber side. They are getting cheerier though! ~§~ Carolin ~§~"

Wow!! Your rhyming was almost not seen! It was so not forced it was scary! It was like you wrote it not meaning for it to rhyme but it just... did... awesome! I loved it!

1 Carolin Emily 'Dragoncat' Southern replies: "  I rewrote this somany times, trying to subtly embed the rhymes rqther than make them glaringly obvious. I am glad it payed off. I have some more poems coming soon, one about phoenixes and one about animagi."

It is true after reading all previous comments you have a superb collection of poems here and the only repproach is that they are all somber and filled with sadness. Now what about writing amusing things on the humouristic side for a change?

Dear author, I read your story of the last dragon and I must say that it turly touched me. As a dragon lover I seek to find splendid poems and stories and I think yours will be added to my list of favorites. Your poem was grand and with your words you made the story seem real, my heart went out to that dragon. But I pray that it not be the last dragon of this world.
