SciFi and Fantasy Art Arctic gryphon by Cecilie Larsen

Does a gryphon always have to be a mix between an eagle and a lion? Or can this mythological creature be a mix between other creatures as well? I've seen different bird/big cat mixes, lupogryphs and hippogrifs. I think, I once saw a penguin/polar bear mix. But as far as I know, this is the only Antarctic Gryphon in the Elfwood. (Please tell me if I'm wrong.) This gryphon is a mix between a penguin and a orca. Both these creatures live at the South Pole, therefore the name. I'm planning on having this coloured with watercolours very soon, but so far it's only pencil on paper.

Update 11/15 2000:
I've finally found some time to get this pic coloured and stuff. It's one of my old(est) pictures, but it's still one of my favourites, so I thought it would look nice with all new colours. What do you think? Are the colours right?

3 Sep 2004	Majik	Loading... I think it's an inspired picture and I don't care what the heck you want to call it. I tend to prefer if people stick to existing definitions if they draw something which has a definite name but all definitions are a little bit flexible. I bet it could swim at quite a pace and be manoeuverable with an orca's tail and penguin's wings.

4 Sep 2004	Rachel	Loading... Wow, I absolutely love this pic. I don't know if it would be considered a gryphin or not, but you're the artist and you get to decide. I love the way you blended the two bodies together, it looks like it should be a real kind of animal. Keep up the amazing work.

26 May 2006	Heather Rae Clever	Loading... I like this, especially the way the penguin blends into the orca so well. At first I thought the frontal fins were too large, but then I realized that you probably meant for them to be proportional in the way a penguin's flippers are to a penguin's body, rather than how an orca's flippers are to an orca's body. And it's a bit funny, the way some like to rigidly classify a creature of -fantasy-.
