To children ran and played together
on a rocky seafoam cliff
Until one made a childish wager
over an agreed-upon kiss
“I'll race you to the sky” he said
Then ran to touch the clouds.
He won, so she laughed, complied.
He had won that one.

Years later, on that self-same cliff
They watched the stars together
until he bent down on one knee
and asked her for forever.
“I'll race you to the sky” she said
Then ran to reach the stars.
She won, and she nodded, smiled.
They both had won that one.

Long after that, and far away
An old man on his death bed lay
beside him was his friend, his wife
kneeling by his bed to pray.
“I'll race you to the sky” he whispered
Then closed his aged eyes.
She just cried, oh, she cried.
And neither of them won.

Then she too, lay still
Upon death's peaceful door
when to her came a sight she'd seen
so many times before.
“I raced you to the sky” he grinned.
Then they hugged, and cried together.
Heaven's gate swung open wide
And she finally had won.
