SciFi and Fantasy Art Arniuun, Goddess of the Third Hour by Courtney Weger Cantrell

Created March 2003. A fellow Elfwoodian, Jason Ellis, invited multiple other Elfwood artists--inluding me--to participate in a project a few years ago. He presented us with a list of names, the pantheon of (16?) gods and goddesses from a story he was working on, and he asked us to illustrate the deity of our choice.

I chose "Arniuun," and it turned out she was the goddess of love and fertility. So I researched some symbols, delved into my sense of fun, and out came the image you see below. I had great fun with this piece and was glad when Jason encouraged me to post the picture here.

If anyone viewing this picture has the urge to criticize me for being a Christian and painting nudes...please restrain yourself.

15 Aug 2006	Ryan 'Saint' Stringer	Loading... OH NOES! I SEE BOOBIES! I MUST AVERT MY EYES AND PRAY FOR FORGIVENESS (for myself) AND ETERNAL HELLFIRE (for you, of course)!!! Because we all know that the human body is an evil, sinful thing in the eyes of God, rolls eyes. Its no wonder the average conservative Christian has such an aversion to helping the third world, I mean, a lot of those women don't even try to hide their evil boulders of sinfulness from plain view! On a serious note, though, this is a wonderful painting and a beautiful rendering of a woman's body. I like that you chose to emulate a more realistic and adult body rather than the overly-sexualized bodies generally found in fantasy art. You know, the kind that only a bulemic fifteen year old with fake breasts could possibly have. This one is graceful and beautiful, while also being a mature woman, not a girl. Very nice! Courtney Weger Cantrell replies: "Ryan, I wouldn't even have to read your stories just to know that you're a writer. The....ummmm.....descriptiveness of your comments speaks volumes. lol ;oDI just stand by my belief that there is a definite distinction between pornography and tasteful nudity in art. That tasteful nudity can be turned into pornography...but 'tis the viewer who chooses to make it such, and against the artist's intention.On to the picture....Give me round-figured women and men any day over the emaciated sex goddess and the over-muscled Adonis! I get so thoroughly sick of the same body type over and over again. Real humans have flab.Thanks for the encouragiing comments on this piece, Ryan. 22 Aug 2006	Mizz. random	Loading... I totally agree with the 1st comment. I'm christian, and I hate it when people tell me it's bad to paint nudes. It's a study of the human body, and meant to be seen as a work of art. I love your painting, and thank you for portraying a WOMAN that is beautiful with out being a twig and big boobed. It's AMAZING! Courtney Weger Cantrell replies: "Thanks very much! An artist is always pleased to hear adjectives such as "amazing" being applied to her art. ;o)As for the issue of Christianity and nudity, I'll say what I said in my reply to the previous comment: I stand by my belief that there is a definite distinction between pornography and tasteful nudity in art. It's not bad to paint nudes...it's bad to turn non-pornographic art into something sinful in one's mind by relinquishing control over one's own thoughts."
