On Christmas nights of wildness born

Love on wings of raven sworn

Somewhere comes the lore told note

Of which man has longed to gloat.

Speak I plane of that note fair

Sung by cord no man could bare.

Dreamed I thus of note on air,

Prisms fire on burning glare.

Within the dream an angel rose

Standing ‘for me, air the pose,

Sword held high, the intent clear,

Not messenger he, I stood to fear.

"Speak, ye, oh heaven sent,"

Said I to specter, spirit lent.

"One in thrice," his voice intoned.

And down I fell, my breath now moaned.

"‘Twas I," my heart did plead with him,

For did I know I was on limb.

"Pity, spare this wretch I am,

For Christ child I know to be the Lamb."

"All that be for God’s own Lamb,

"Nothing more Since Abraham.

"I come to watch you Christmas morn,

"That none would steal from you this form."

And then I knew why he was there,

The messenger that hung mid air.

Not death be brought upon my head,

But God’s own grace the Lamb had lead

Beneath the tree I set and thought

Fire burning ever hot.

Lamb of life was born for me

And angel came that I might see.
