Her firstborn bike is coiled at rest, ready to be tested. It's been a long stretch in school, a longer one reaching towards adulthood amid strangers who've only known one world, one way, and who would keep her in one place; sedate, safe- hands buried in sterile paper instead of the guts of gears. But she's here at the edge of what they know, and her baby will carry her towards whatever lies beyond. She waits, under the arc of a bridge, in the mouth of a tunnel, watching the day stain her road a sweet, clean red. One of my big acrylic pieces on canvas
