David A Ullery

David was born and raised in South Bend, Indiana (go Notre Dame!). But currently resides in Utah (love the mountains, but miss the trees). He Graduated from BYU with a BA in Film Production. Has published a book and several short stories. He worked for two TV NEWS stations as a videographer and editor. Finally got brave enough to submit his art. So far it has been well received.

READING: I read and collect books.  I grew up reading comic books and the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs (Tarzan, John Carter of Mars, Pellucidar, etc).  I easily moved on to Robert E. Howard (Conan).  Finally I branched out to other works and authors such as Stephan R. Donaldson, Frank Herbert, J.R.R. Tolkein, David Eddings, Terry Brooks, Robert Jordan, Fritz Leiber, Orson Scott Card, J.K. Rowling, Piers Anthony...the list could go on.

WRITING: I have always been a writer and artist (with mixed results).  I am a published writer "The Tarzan Novels of Edgar Rice Burroughs: An Illustrated Readers Guide", and several short stories published in a newsletter called "Vigor" by Orson Scott Card and his wife.  I once even had a small art studio set up in the basement of Orson Scott Card.  I am in the middle of writng a fantasy series and a few other books. I have also written several screenplays that have done well in contests, but no big sales yet.  Some day...

ART: A doodler my whole life I have created my own style that was strongly influenced by Frank Frazetta, Boris Vallejo, John Buscema, John Byrne, Neal Adams, Mark Shultz, Joe Kubert, and such masters of book covers and comic books. Unfortunately I am not as good as any of them, but I do my best.  I prefer pencil, and am always learning and experimenting with pen/brush and ink.  I have all but hung up my paint brushes in both watercolor and oils.  I am tempted to get them out again though.  I have also done graphic design work.  Lately my work has been well received in the RPG world of Tunnels and Trolls.

FILM and VIDEO: I love the film industry.  It is where all the visual and artistic talents come together: photography, writing, art, acting, dance, costuming, props, audio, computer, animation...

I have a Bachelor of Arts degree from Brigham Young University with an emphasis in screenwriting and my supportive area was animation.  I have freelanced for several small films including an HBO special.  I worked for two local TV NEWS stations (Utah and Indiana) as a videographer and editor.  I wrote, edited, shot, starred in and produced a parody of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings aptly titled "Parody of the RIngs".  It is 90 minutes long and took about as long to make as his entire trilogy!

CURRENTLY: I help the local high school students with their broadcast classes, still write and illustrate, and work full time as a wood worker, custom designing and building funiture (tables, chairs, dressers, etc).  Wood working is another art form in my oppinion.  With my own wood shop at home I keep all the kids in the neighborhood thrilled with my wooden swords and other wepons and props.

You have an impressive variety of drawings in your gallery - you do a good job of depicting action and different characters and emotions. Would be nice to see some of this in colour too. 2

Thanks for all your kind comments. Yes, I do allow the use of my work, but you must contact me and talk about what you have in mind first, so we can work out some sort of agreement and/or understanding.

Is "The Tarzan Novels of Edgar Rice Burroughs: An Illustrated Readers Guide" still in print. Can I order it on Amazon.com? I really loved the Tarzan series too; read all 24 of them. People don’t realize how different they were from most of the movies, most of which just don’t capture the wonder and excitement of the books.
PS: Is your fantasy series illustrated. If not, you really should reconsider.
