I am 20, Christian, with a very very very very very complex family background, grew up as a missionary kid, and right now am studying theology.
I'm a bit weird, as a result. I'm less old-fashioned than I used to be, at least. My "dream jobs" when I was younger ranged from astronaut to nun to Greenpeace activist, now I'm more into becoming a missionary - and still writing, if I manage.
My examples in writing are J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis - which is why I'm such a pessimist, probably, because who can ever be as good as them???
My inspiration comes from various places. I've noticed that my mixed-culture background influences me way more than I realise (for instance, there's always a culturally-confused character, homeless character, or lost character in my stories). I also often write about issues that I think about a lot (forgiveness, faith, pacifism, etc).
I read very little fantasy (because after reading Tolkien and Lewis nothing is good enough anymore), but I love writing it - or trying to! Lately I've been writing hardly anything... :( But I'll try to, next to homework...

Recent News / Coming Soon (March 11):
- I've been away... and I'm not sure I'm back, since I haven't written any fantasy stories for ages and don't have any ideas, and no time to improve Love your Enemies which is still my never-ending project...
- If you still want to look at my writing nonetheless, even the stuff which isn't fantasy, then take a look here: deng-li-xin32.deviantart.com
(The kind of things you'll find there: my religious poetry, watercolour paintings, and photography..)
- I might be back with a novella or something some time; I do actually have an idea but no time to write it so far. :)
LyE illustrations:

Some interesting links:
A language construction kit - how to make up a language. Fascinating and, even if it's a bit complicated, inspiring.
TCKid - for missionary kids and third culture kids etc.
Refracted Light and the Christian Guide to Fantasy - reviews of Fantasy books from a Christian viewpoint. I find them really useful in assessing the moral messages of my stories - plus they're interesting!
A Mary Sue litmus test - can help check how realistic your character is. There's a few other litmus tests (you can find the links at the bottom of the Wikipedia page on 'Mary Sue'); each gives you a sort of different result, none is perfectly reliable, but just looking at the questions gives ideas.
And do please check out my favourites - there's some EXCELLENT writers and artists on the list!

Favorite Fantasy/Scifi BooksThe Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, Inkheart, Harry Potter. I don't read much else fantasy, because actually I prefer classics. My very favourite books are missionary biographies.

Uni is keeping me really really busy, but I’m enjoying it most of the time. Only trouble is homesickness sometimes on weekends when I’m alone; I just recently discovered that I’m absolutely no good at living on my own lol~
And how have you been?? I’ll have holidays soon, and though I have to study for exams I’m sure I’ll manage to pass by and read once in a while (when I’m in reach of internet haha)"
| 14 Dec 2009 | Lindsay Verde | Loading...That’s ok! I’m lucky in that I have lots of free time at the moment, so I can bug everyone on elfwood . Are you almost done exams for the semester? I know exactly what you mean - I’m rubbish at living on my own ... perhaps why I’m taking so long to move out and I’ve also got to find a place that allows big dogs Do you get to go home for the holidays? I’m doing alright ... even though I’m not working as much as in the summer I’m still finding lots to occupy my time, haven’t gotten bored of it yet! But the writing has been suffering a bit these last weeks since I finished nano ... I just can’t seem to buckle down and write anything worth reading But that will come in time, my muses are just a bit burnt out of creative ideas. | |

| 20 Mar 2010 | Deunan Gabriella Kershaw | Loading...I was wondering, will you ever put up the old version of Love Your Enemies? And it not here, how about Deviantart? It’s such an awesome story and I really want to read the whole thing again. Désirée Dippenaar replies: "Hm, I could!! I realise that which I have here is extremely fragmentary. And btw, did you prefer the old version? It’s interesting, because I keep thinking the new one should be better but then I’m also scared it might be a deprovement rather than improvement!
Thanks for suggesting though! I don’t really like the old version anymore personally (I find too many gaps and jumps and uncomfortable errors), BUT if I do have the old version somewhere still (thing is I’m not sure, because my old computer crashed last summer and I might only have half of the old version on the new computer), I WILL post it either here or on DeviantArt or Fictionpress or somewhere.
I’m really glad you like it so much! Thank you! "
| 28 Mar 2010 | Deunan Gabriella Kershaw | Loading...The story itself is marvelous, but I do like the improvements in the new version. Longer and more descriptive! AAAH YAY!! AWESOME!! Please post a link when it’s up! | |
| 29 Jul 2010 | Lindsay Verde | Loading...Hi Desiree! How’s school going? Are you on your summer vacation right now? | |
| 26 Dec 2010 | Lindsay Verde | Loading...Hey Desiree, hoping you have a wonderful Christmas and a happy new year! Désirée Dippenaar replies: "Hi Lindsay!! Sorry I’ve been so uncommunicable for ages and ages and never replying anything! :/ I’m not on Elfwood so much anymore, because I’ve been writing a ton of non-fantasy poetry which doesn’t exactly go on here... so it’s all on my deviantArt account instead lol. I really haven’t been on here for ages! xD
And how are you?" | |
