August 29, 2005 Acrylic paints, Flair pen, and liquid leaf on parchment. A snarly dragon bites the base of the initial, as two other dragons are woven into the actual structure of the letter. The initial 'D' is done in a style that was popular in illumated documents, particularly religious texts, in England's 12th century. I had it in my mind to draw a cover for a book when I designed this, though I've yet to write or find a book on Dragons to go with it.

This picture is now available on clothing, posters, mugs, mouse pads, and other great items at my online store. I hope you'll check it out!

I like the D; its cute. I also like all the fleur-de-lis on it. They are very decorative. Nice job.

2 Debbie Palmer replies: "Thank you! I'm really enjoying my work with illumination. It's very beautiful, for the most part. The initials are something special, and I thought I'd try something whimsical with it."

I will write you a book entitled "Dragon", just for this picture.
Seriously.
I'm crazy! I'll do it!

This is the best. It's just like those detailed hand-copied manuscripts that mideaval monks would do.

2 Debbie Palmer replies: "Thank you! You're exactly right. This is modeled after a U in an Augustinian Bible from the 12th century, and a P from another Bible of the same period. I updated the dragons a bit, though, as the dragons used in illuminations in the period often resembled wolves more than what we think of as dragons."

The details are astonishing.
