The Jewel
By: Bret D. Measor
Well it has been some time now but I remember it like it was yesterday. I came from the north after traveling with a group of Orc killers and we came to this town. I told the group that I was going to stay here for a bit and just relax kind of an early retirement. We went to the local tavern to celebrate and that’s when I saw Clint sitting around the fireplace strumming his guitar and singing songs of adventure, the whole crowd was laughing at the site of a dwarf bard. Even the elves got a laugh at out of it and they hardly smirk at anyone other then there own race. I pulled up a chair near the fire pit and Clint sang a song about a jewel a very rare jewel, after he was done his song he walked over to the bar and hopped up on a seat. His song made me curious so I followed him to learn more. Clint had a way with words that night he told me exactly where this cave was and what to expect when you get there. I put a coin on the table and paid for his drink and I was off on my own adventure, lets just say I was very naïve.
I trekked through the Fydia forest the exact way Clint told me to go and he was right the cave was right there little did I know Clint was following me the whole way. I approached the cave with caution cause his story said something about the jewel being guarded by a wyvern. I saw the sleeping beast just lying there coiled around the base with the jewel on top of it. I crept in nice a slowly so I could avoid confrontation with the beast, I had the jewel in my hand until Clint tripped on a rock and his girlish scream echoed through the cave. At first I thought it was a banshee but there he was right behind me and behind him was the band of Orc killers and I was standing over top of a waking wyvern. I dropped the crystal on the wyverns head and I ran for the exit, I picked up Clint on the way since he was fumbling around. We crashed through the Orc killers who had no clue on what was going on and well lets just say those Orc Killers where a good dinner for that wyvern cause it forgot about us.
I ran deep in the forest until we came to a clearing and I sat the crying dwarf down. Let me explain this, you see that jewel was a dwarf jewel and Clint used me to get it for him so he could take it back to his father the king of the dwarves and prove that a bard is just as important as a warrior. After he blew his noise and whipped his tears we decided to go back into the cave together and see if the wyvern was full enough and sleeping again. I peered into the mouth of the cave and there he was sleeping again, after telling Clint to stay outside I slowly made my way inside, stepping over limbs and pools of Orc blood. The jewel was in site and once again I had my hands on the jewel, and once again Clint came running in, he shrieked again at the site of blood and dismembered bodies. The beast woke up I tossed the jewel to Clint who fumbled it around almost dropping it. I kicked the beast in the head and stunned it for a second, I ran hard out of the cave with Clint under my arm, and we dove into the forest. Lucky for us a band of elves that heard the story that Clint told in the tavern came looking for the jewel also. To there demise they went into the cave where a waking wyvern was waiting for a meal, and Clint and I fell over with laughter that we came out alive with the jewel in hand.
