Archangel Michael for Christmas 2006

Well, I am glad to say that this is my “decent” art effort as of late.
I have been so busy with other things and commission work that I haven’t done any art for myself for a long, long time.

This is my Christmas card design for this year. It’s my boyfriend Mike as the Archangel Michael (and no, his hair isn’t that long in reality, but he IS that slim).
I was fed up with my computer being an arse, so I just coloured and scanned him in, and added the rest in Photoshop.

I based his pose off a picture I took of him, holding my plastic sword :)
I wanted a kind of Art Nouveau style mixed with the stained glass window look. Inspired by Alphonse Mucha, of course.
Overall, I’m quite happy with it, even though I really wanted to create it all in Photoshop.

I’m also giving Mike a deluxe print with special engraved badge I did on it as part of his Christmas present!

Your friend is really a lucky man, needless to say. This pic shows great detail and beautiful colours, the pose is really striking. Those wings are quite realistic too.
But, did you have to make him a Gryffindor ?

Great! I love how you mixed the styles for a beautiful result. Congratulations to the Mods for the Choice.

Very interesting! I love how noble he looks! The design of the character fits very well with the wonderful colours you chose! Awesome work!

Wonderful work! The mixture of styles turned out really well. Great colouring... It's very realistic. I especially like the wings.

I like it, but i think that his hair and his nose don't fit....It makes him look like a derelict...Maybe because of his receding hairline. But i like the rest of it, keep it up!

This is great! The colours are really warm and strong, and as said before, the pose is very realistic and striking. I've seen many of Mucchas works at an art museum (I also have a book about his art) and I can really see the similarities between your awesome pic and his works! But you have also managed to bring something new and different to this image... Congrats!

Beautifully colored! I really, really like the wings. They are perfectly understated.

In reply to the Gryffindor question, I think Michael’s symbol was the lion, although I picture him in white armour with red gilding
