|By the suggestion of a reader I tried to explain what happened to Kira to make her run from her home.||
Kira's screams rang out under the pink full moon. A young sprite with shoulder length, silky blond hair, dark cobalt eyes with metallic green specks stood holding her pale hands.
"Just breath love, you are doing good."
"Oh, that's easy for you to say." Kira's usual voice of bells clanked with pain.
"Malachi, just be quiet and allow her to break you hand." A faerie with dark red hair and green wings spoke from between Kira's legs.
"Will everyone just shut up and deliver this child?" Kira's breathing continued to increase.
Malachi kissed Kira's forehead gently and his dark blue wings brushed her cheeks. "I'm sorry dear. I'll be quiet now, I'll be quiet."
"I see a head. Keep pushing, just keep pushing." The midwife spoke calmly as Kira pushed.
Slowly a small form emerged. She had ten fingers, teen toes, dark brown eyes, and tiny violet wings. She cried as she rubbed her eyes with balled up hands.
The midwife carefully wrapped the small girl and handed her to her mother. Kira cradled the child against her bosom and watched as the midwife left her and Malachi alone.
Malachi pushed Kira's wet red hair back behind her ears and smiled. "What do you want to name her?"
"Lael, my beautiful star. Her eyes are so bright." Kira's tears fell upon Lael's brow.
Malachi attempted to brush on of the tears away. "It's taken us a long time, but now that we've got her and are together we can finally be happy."
"I know, the tow of you are my entire world. What would I do without you?"
"I love you." Malachi kissed her lips and passionately without reserve Kira returned the gesture. "Sleep dear, you could use some rest. I'll take Lael."
"What if she gets hungry?"
"I'll wake you the minutes she starts crying. I promise."
Kira hesitated for a moment. "Okay, I guess you'll be okay. Don't let me sleep more than a couple hours."
Kira reluctantly handed Lael to Malachi. He exited the small room and Kira snuggled under her cotton covers. "Everything will be alright." She closer her eyes and fell into a deep peaceful slumber.
Kira awoke to find several people talking in front of her door. She walked over to the door and cautiously opened it. Her father, mother and most of her friends were standing around in a circle. "What's going on?" Kira asked sleepily.
Everyone turned to the small faerie and Kira's father grabbed her hand. "Love, something terrible has happened."
Kira's father looked around at all the frowning faces. "Malachi took Lael out for a walk after you feel asleep. He thought it would be good for her to see the brook and be out in the sun. It's such a beautiful day for a walk don't you think?"
"Where are they?" Kira began to cry as she spoke.
"They were attacked by a dragon. Lael was taken and Malachi was seriously hurt. He's sleeping at my house now, but its serious."
Kira flew off toward's her parent's house as fast as her tiny wings would take her. "Kira come back." Her father knew he was wasting his breath.
Kira arrived and ran to Malachi's side. He was laying on his back and blood was leaking through the blankets. Sweat covered his sleeping head. "Oh Malachi, please don't leave me." Kira pleaded to the sleeping figure and all that she had ever believed in.
Kira sat with him all night and through most of the next day. Several people came to offer her food, but she just sat there totally vigilant refusing to leave her post. Around midday her father entered. "Kira, come out into the sunshine for awhile, he'll be fine for a couple minutes. You need a short break. Just five minutes. Please dear."
Kira looked up at her father's pleading eyes. She slowly stood up and kissed Malachi's forehead before she followed her father into the sunshine.
"Kira we found Lael. She was dropped from a cliff. She's already been buried with the rest of the family. I am sorry love." Kira collapsed to the ground.
"What did I ever do to deserve this."
Her father knelt down beside her and caressed her hair. "Oh, you know this isn't your fault. These things just happened. You are still very young and can recover from this."
"I need to check on Malachi." Kira walked back beside Malachi in tears. She kissed his mouth and collapsed. "Father...."
"Yes." He entered and stood by the door.
"He's dead too."
Malachi was buried next to Lael under a large ash tree where the sun would always shine upon them. Kira planted moon flowers and roses on their grave that first spring. By summer she had decided that there was nothing left for her in her place of birth, and thus set out for the outside world.
