|The return of someone special, that I think you will all enjoy especially since he is staying around for a while.||
"Gabrielle, will you please join me in the study." Gabrielle had just risen when Rebbecca extended her unrefusable invitation, and then Rebbecca simply turned and proceeded out of the parlor, pale green satin swirling behind her. Gabrielle quietly shut the lip to her black marble coffin. Behind the open lace curtains laid the deep indigo sky of early evening, a gentle breeze stirred the newly fallen apple blossoms. She glanced at her slightly rumpled violet gown, "I should change, and fix my hair as well."
Twenty minutes later, Gabrielle slipped into the study. Her curls fell onto bares shoulders and black velvet. Her curtsy barely required a bend knee, "You called."
"Why is it hat you insist on being so formal around me? I have tried to be a friend towards you, and you politely treat me like an enemy."
"I am sorry." Her voice held restrained anger and tears.
Rebbecca held her hand up. "Not tonight," as she walked to the desk and pulled out a black diamond set in a string of black pearls and fastened the choker around Gabrielle's neck, the diamond resting in the hollow of her throat. "Now, don't look so shocked, I do love you. And it is your birthday. I thought you would like these since everyday you dance as if you are awaiting an invitation to dance with death."
"Tonight I would have been twenty-six. Ten years I resided in Paris without ever seeing it in the light of day."
"No, none of your loathing, depressed diatribes." Her raised hand left no room for response. "You have been invited to the Spring Ball at the manor of Duke Faseaux." Gabrielle's eyes widened to the invitation. "And I can't have you seen alone." Gabrielle sank a little at the thought of Rebbecca's choice in escorts. "He is awaiting you out front." Rebbecca took her hand and led her out the front door.
Standing by a carriage with a perfectly matched team of four horses was a man she believed she would never see again, and a woman who haunted her nightmares.
Maria spoke, "Rebbecca and I have spoken often of your transgressions. You were very young as was my Kendroe; and I fear I was too hard on both of you. As amends I give you this birthday present, a night just the two of you."
Gabrielle started at the man with jet black hair braided down to his waist and eyes of amber skies. "Well, do I get a hello?" His voice had deepened since they had hid below the willow.
"Oh, Kendroe." Gabrielle rushed into his arms. "I worried so about you." His arms enfolded her pale torso.
"Come let us talk in the carriage." she followed, not remembering him being so assertive ten years before.
The carriage began to move to the sound of hooves beating against packed dirt. "So, where have you been. You can tell that I am in the same place."
"All over the world. I have missed you Gaby. You have no idea how much I have thought about you." He brushed the curls past her cheeks.
"Probably, as much as I have thought of you. I feared she had killed you."
"Maria has a flare for the dramatic...and chains." Gabrielle had to smile when he go that mischievous grin. "But, tonight is just for the two of us. And Maria has taken a house in the city, she intends to stay for awhile. Just a night full of good news."
"Will she allow us to see each other?" Fear tipped Gabrielle's question.
His lips upon hers forced the question from her head. Their tongues danced for dominance. "Yes, my red clawed princess, we can finally be together without having to hide."
"You still haven't told me where you have been, or why she let you come back." They held hands while Gabrielle laid her head on Kendroe's shoulder.
"She showed me the entire world, we were always moving. She even showed me America, this primitive town of New Orleans. It was one of the most beautiful cities, it almost rivaled our Paris. She was trying to make up for the pain of my losing you." He paused for a couple seconds staring out the window, pondering his next words. "And about five years ago she turned me."
"You act as if I didn't already know, I could tell the minute I touched your skin, you have lost the warmth of the mortal." Gabrielle smiled and kissed him without reservation. "Do you know why she turned you?"
"I think she always planned to, was just waiting for me to get old enough. I must have been closed to nineteen when she did it. When she bought me in India I was only twelve and she raised me to be comfortable in this world."
"She has a good eye for beauty." Gabrielle smiled before she kissed him on his forehead.
"Thank you," his cheeks took a slight pink tint, "and still you can make me blush." He took a couple of breaths before continuing, "I don't know what made her decided to return to Paris. And contact Rebbecca. Maybe she just wants me to be happy."
The coach halted a hand extended through the opening door. Gabrielle stared at the moonlit garden as Kendroe took her arm and led her up the pure white steps. Beyond the large double doors couples danced and drank champagne from flawless fluted crystal. This is the world that Gabrielle enjoyed, the false sunlight of candles, where the night truly belonged to her.
The night wound on as Gabrielle and Kendroe danced, two matching demons with raven hair and powder ivory skin. As the night threatened to surrendered to the dawn's lethal intrusion the talked of feeding. From the multitude of couples the choose angels with blues eyes and powered skin. Their bright red blood stained the lips of demons.
