The idea for this got stuck in my head, so I ended up writing it on my phone while eating lunch.
Mommy works late. Um, I mean, she used to before I found my new Jack. Mommy said she's not going to work today. Wait, no, let me tell you.
Yesterday, mommy went to work really early. Mommy goes to work a lot. But, yesterday she left before I even finished breakfast. She was in a hurry, she said, and she went down the road past Mister Joopus' house. Mister Joopus lives in a big house down the road. One day, I'm going to see what's past his house. I think there's a dragon or a castle or a circus. I saw those in books. Mister Joopus checks on me at lunchtime.
I have jobs. Lots of jobs. I have to make my bed and brush my teeth and put my breakfast dishes away. Then, I feed the goats and the geese and my bird and my rabbit. And, I get the eggs and put them in the basket and put the shiny egg in the box by the door. Then, I get to play with my toys until lunch. If Mister Joopus needs help at his house, I go help him. I'm real strong and help lots. Mister Joopus is old, but mommy says I'm not supposed to say that.
When, I got the eggs yesterday, no, before yesterday, the shiny one wasn't there. It was rolling out of the door. Except it wasn't rolling. A funny, small man was taking it. So, I yelled at him to stop, because that's my egg and he didn't ask. He stopped and looked at me and made a funny noise. Then, he ran away. And he ran past our fence toward the fog. Then, I couldn't see him anymore, because the fog only is high to my knees but the man was really small. I'm not allowed to walk in the fog because after a while, there's no more ground. Sometimes, I throw rocks to see if I can hear them hit the ground. Sometimes, I don't hear anything. Mommy says not to do that, but I do it and she doesn't know.
My mommy said she was mad because I lost the egg and made up stories. But, she wasn't mad. She's not a good pretender. She was upset. And that's different, because it's like mad, but not at anything.
That was before yesterday. Yesterday, mommy left early, so I did my chores fast and was hiding next to the door. I saw the little man again. I ran really fast and scooped him up. Then, I took him inside and put him in an old birdcage and looked at him for a while. I could tell he was scared. He looked just like a man but his face was a little pointy like a rat but he didn't have whiskers. I said he looked like a ratman, but he started making lots of squeaky noises but I couldn't hear him too good so I leaned in real close. He was talking! He said he wasn't a rat, he was Jack. My new Jack was going to be so much fun to play with. I never have anyone to talk to except Mister Joopus and his breath smells like old pumpkins.
I told my new Jack we were going to be best friends and he got real quiet. Then he said he was hungry so I went to get him some bread. But when I came back, he wasn't in the cage anymore. He was running away to the fog again. I got real mad, then. He was supposed to be my friend, and I was gonna show mommy I wasn't making up stories. So, I chased him into the fog, but I couldn't see him so I just kept running. But, then, I was falling. And I fell through the fog until there was no more fog and I was in the sky! There was a big vine and a mountain and I was falling next to them, so I grabbed the vine and I was sliding down it. But it hurt my hands a lot and I fell again.
When I woke up, I was on the ground and it was almost dark. Mommy gets home when it's dark and she was gonna be real mad if I was gone. I looked up and saw the vine going up the mountain, into the clouds. Except those clouds were the bottom of the fog and I had to get up there. It was real high. When I grabbed the vine, something stung me in the leg. I turned around and saw lots of Jacks. They were making lots of noise and some.were riding around on carts that moved by themselves. And they were pointing sticks at me and then I got stung a lot. I started crying, but they didn't stop. I wanted to go home. I grabbed the vine and climbed really fast. I'm a good climber, but they kept stinging me so I slipped a couple times. But, then I got higher and the stinging stopped.
It was dark when I got home and mommy was there and Mister Joopus was with her and she was crying. Then she saw me and saw some of the places I got stung were bleeding. She made me tell her all about my new Jack and all the other Jacks and how they were mean. Then, she told me it was all okay and I wasn't in trouble. After dinner, she said I had to get a good sleep and we had to leave in the morning really early.
Mister Joopus' horse is pulling the big cart and mommy is in the back with me. Mister Joopus says I can ride up with him later. Mommy told me this morning we are moving and we can't come back. She said it's because the Jacks will all come and they will take me away or hurt me. She won't tell me where we are going. I don't think she knows. I hope there's a dragon or a castle or a circus. I saw those in books. I hope there's no Jacks.
