I love old ruined castles and I just love Helms Deep, and I just love these two characters, they're like Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier. Both hate each others guts at the beginning for racial reasons, and by the end none of that matters. Anyway, this is just before the battle, and here are Gimli and Legolas just taking a bit of time out to view the scenery. Yes I know he's supposed to be blonde, and he looks nothing like Orlando Bloom but thats how I saw him when I read the book, and thats how I'll always see him, Alan Lee is welcome to his own Legolas but leave me with mine.

I think this is a very very good picture of two once enemies as friend over a battle field. It is very nice. Thanks a lot for the comment. Get the feeling that although they're looking away from each other, they're not enemies.

I have to say, I LOVE your rendition of these two characters and this particular scene. I applaud you for having the ability to hold true to your original visualization of these characters, even after the movie. I especially like the way Gimly looks though.I am now finding it particularly hard to visualise on paper these two characters without adding bits from the films to them. (I have this naive view that I am, in some way, original). The fight goes on. Thanks for the comment...

Awesome picture!
You did a brillant job on both of them especially the height comparison between wood and grey elves and dwarves. Its prefect.
They arent supposed to be around the height of the high-elves and Half-elven like in the movie.
They aren't Moriquendi for nothing.2 And I'm glad someone else oput there dosn't picture Legolas with Blonde hair.
Although I imagined him with red hair myself but thats just me.2

Just my bit on the hair colour spelling debate, 'blonde' used to be the feminine form of the word. For amles 'blond' is the usual spelling and in the intersts of political correctness is now the correct spelling for females as well. People still use blonde. oh, and not all elves have blonde hair, Tinuviel, and by extension, Arwen have dark hair.

Ery nicely drawn picture! I agree with you that this is your favorite part in the book. Im not yet there in the book but i ve seen the movie and the whole part about helms deep and the battle and everything is my favorite part.

This picture is really amazing. For the whole hair color bit, draw him however you picture him. In fact, as someone mentioned, wood elves have dark hair, so there really is no problem. again, I love the picture. The shading is especially good.

I hope youre a third grader cause if you are its a great picture, however if youre not you really need to practice cause this picture sucks absolutely no concept of light and dark or shadows. Looking at this picture is giving me a migrane just a scribble of lines. A good artist is not made by what they draw but rather by what they see. Pay attention to detail. If you afraid of criticism dont ask for comments on the web.

Ptch, its awesome, plus people draw and paint in certain ways- think about personal style! Screw shadow, if he doesn't want shadow then that shouldn't matter, the picture is great, it's not my visualisation, but i respect and admire his- maybe you should too.

I love the feeling of companionship in this picture. Elf and dwarf don't look at each other or stand very close, but it's perfectly clear they are very much at ease with each other, talking quietly as they wait for the Saruman's army to approach.
Nice details on Gimli's armour and axe. As for the ever ongoing, age-old Legolas'-hair-colour-debate: No fireproof statement for either fair or dark is given in LotR, so it's up to personal interpretation.
By the way, if I remember right nothing is ever said about Gimli's hair colour, he could be anything from light blond to night black, but I have never seen his hair colour discussed anywhere.
One minor bit of criticism: While Gimli's face is much broader than Legolas', his hands are just as wide as the elf's, which makes them a bit too refined IMO.
Keep up the good work!
