Hi, Lynn I saw your comment to Nathanael so I’l post the same thing here:
As to backing up files. You should also have printed copies of everything you write. That way if your disc crashes, a CD is unreadable, or the file gets corrupted, you still have the written word. Now all you have to do is take the pages, scan them in, and rebuild the manuscript without trying to remember what you wrote or spending so much time. The only thing left to do after that is make some adjustments and editing.
Scanners are cheap now, even cheaper with multi-function copier / scanner / printers. Not practical? Neither is spending hours and days rewriting lost manuscripts.

I learned very quickly when a long story I wrote got partially corrupted and I had to rewrite several pages. Now I save each chapter as a separate file. So if that particular file is wrecked, the rest of a long manuscript is left alone. Then I rebuilt what I lost with the printed stuff. It makes a longer file list, but it sure beats spending a lot time time redoing stuff I already did.
Also, with the kind of sort of unpredictable weather you guys have where a pop-up thunderstorm can cause these problems. I keep my ears out for the rain and thunder then shut down my computer, and disconnect everything with a setup I have. Everything is unplugged with one plug, then I unplug my modem from an independent socket I have easy access too.
You might consider a UPS or Uninterruptable Power Supply. It’s like a surge protector on steroids. It has a battery backup for several minutes, depending on how long you need, so your computer doesn’t crash when the power goes out unexpextantly. These UPS’s give you time to save your work and shut down your computer normally.
The only problem is, the batteries have to be replaced every three-four-to five years. THey lose the ability to hold a charge when they start going bad. They look like this, though you don’t have to get this exact one:

"what a great idea. I have surge protectors but they didn’t help. But I will do what you say. When we hear storms or even get a hint that one is comming we shut eveything down. I even pull the phone lines out of the back of the computer. But surprise storms are so hard to deal with. Thanks so much. apreciate the addvice."
