| 7 Jan 2011 | Jennifer Suzanne Steier | Loading...Your characters are all quite lovely, nice job on the painting... I cant paint to save my life, so I’m always impressed by those who can *S*, but why are your characters all so serious? They have the calm cool blankness of a banker, or a lawyer, and express no joy in their being, the look on a characters face will always determine the temperature in a piece, no matter how warm or cold the surroundings... if you can master that, as well as you have mastered painting, then your pieces will soar to stunning new heights! Namaste Creator, thankyou for sharing your talent with us. Lena V. Bazhenova replies: "Wow, Jennifer, thank you so much for the insightful comment! First of all, I just want to say that I am nowhere near ’mastering’ painting. I’m always learning =) And to answer your question, sometimes I just paint for the sake of painting, but most of the time, my characters come with a story. And most of those stories are not happy or joyful. I can’t really tell you why that is -- those stories just come to me from somewhere, and I simply try to portray them either in painting or writing. You are right in saying that I can’t paint really obvious and explicit facial expressions. Instead I paint very, very subtle expressions that are not obvious at all. And because I don’t always share all of the stories that go with my paintings, other people may not understand why my characters look the way they do. Blossom, for example (from Orange Blossom) was ostracized for much of her youth, and then had to leave her home and her family due to some insinuating circumstances. Adelaide (from The Faerie Garden) was mistreated and wrongly accused, and had to grow up way too early and way too quickly. And I do also have some paintings where the character is smiling, like Violets. While most of my characters may not express joy in their being, as you have put it, I don’t think that equates to being blank and emotionless. Also, sometimes a character’s look can be misleading, and I personally don’t feel that it is the most important aspect of a piece. In real life, do people always show their true emotions? No, they don’t. So if I painted a person grinning widely from ear to ear, but put them in a really dreary, gloomy setting the overall painting would still not have a happy vibe. Maybe it would be a representation of the character’s inner suffering and that she’s trying to hide her true feelings and pretending to be happy. But all that aside, you’re definitely right in saying that I need to practice more, which I will definitely do and hopefully I will be able to portray my stories through my character’s expressions as best as I can.
